    I worked for an outfit that built optics for colliders like that. Wild stuff. Makes the Hubble space telescope look tame.

    They've broken it quite hard (they were going to shut down over the winter anyway). Though it is an engineering problem rather than a design fault,(fixable); there is a super photo shot of it next to the Stargate opening from the old TV show, very close, very very close.
