I have a 40' Yacht and want to start doing some coastal cruising maybe even a Tasman crossing. My yacht has no generating power other than the Yanmar 54 altanator 75amps?. I think I need about 200 watt solar panels to run fridge and auto helm. Flexiable panels appeal as I am told they can be zipped on to the existing Bimini and that the curve in the bimini will make sure that one is always working well. Solid panels will need a expensive stainless frame built and the weight of this, plus the panel, I could do without. Is there a good relyable flexiable solution out there ie: proven brands and brands to keep away from!!!!!!!!! or were this info would be avaliable. Are flexable panels a good option. Regards. Rob.
Solbian Panels are expensive, however they have a very good name. SolbianFlex Solar Panels - lightweight, flexible solar for marine, motorhomes and camping - YouTube This supplier is 30 minutes drive from you: SolbianFlex Flexible Solar Panel 125 Watt - 1380 x 680mm (CP125) Suppliers
The price of solar panels (rigid) and attending hardware have dropped by about half or more in the last couple years. Our installs of panels on RV's have doubled, at least in the past year due to price reduction. You could install a whole bunch of rigids for the price they are showing on those flexible types. IMHO.
Wow those flexible panels are expensive. A rigid panel can be bought for $0.71/watt. Those Solbian are $7-$13/watt. No way can I justify that much money for a bit of flexibility in a panel. In addition to the price the flexible panels are significantly less efficient. If you can find a spot for a smaller rigid panel that would be the lowest cost solution.
Thanks for the help so far, I must say I thought there would be more info on the subject, has anyone got flexable panels and can recomend them, or are they a waste of time. Regards Rob.
