Waoh Kevin, nice post. That volvo ocean racer was going so fast that it was planing almost like it was on trim tabs. Amazing footage though, the wind is a serious thing with these vessel, serious propulsion.

Yeah, the Volvo Open 70 is one fast machine. The current ISAF 24 hour distance record is held by Ericsson 4 which was the winning boat of the last Volvo Ocean Race. And before them the record was held by ABN AMRO 2 who set their record during the previous VOR.

    Pirates sailing!

    VOR

The IMOCA Open 60s are awesome too, especially when you consider that they're generally sailed solo around the world, non-stop.

    IMOCA 60

He must love the taste of salt spray!

And then you have the real crazies.... guys who go out in 33' Beneteaus in 55 knots of wind!

count me in the closet sailor category....

actually, since my tender is now a sailboat, it guess i came out of the closet! couple of weeks ago we bought a 12' catboat which despite the 6' beam fits neatly on the top deck of our 53!

for sport, we also have a Hobie 16, but i'm pretty impressed by the Catboat even compared to the hobie.

next year, i'm going to put the Hatt. for sale and getting an 50-60 sailboat!

certainly not extreme sailing, quite the opposite...

    Thanks for posting that Rene.

It makes you think, just what was the scariest era of Whitbread/Volvo racing?

The early boats were mostly good production hulls and sails, no electronic aids and good seamanship.

In the late '80s and '90s Maxi boat technology was forced into Around the World racing. Very scary stuff with no 'off-button' and a real gung-ho attitude prevailed.

Now adays the race seems like a long Match Racing tour in some swing-keel day boats falling apart with the mearest whiff of rough weather.

Or am I just getting to be an old f*rt?

4200 nautical miles from La Rochelle, France to Salvador de Bahia, Brasil... with a brief stop in Funchal, Madeira.

    In a 21' foot sailboat.

    Alone.

Not a video, just a great image taken on the 3rd leg of La Solitaire du Figaro. The leg was 475 miles from Ireland to France, and of the nearly 50 boats competing, 22 finished within 1 hour of the leader.
