Running 32vdc with 36vdc batteries

    Has anyone tried running a 32vdc system, using 36volt batteries?? If so what complications have you seen??

    Never tried it, but I feel it would not be a good idea because the battery chargers and alternators would sense the batteries are not full charged and stay in charge mode.

    My thought was to to increase the alternator voltage. As to 110v chargers, couldn't one use multiple chargers to charge individual batteries?. This configuration would also allow me to get 12vdc and 24vdc if needed.

    why do you want to bother doing that? your charger will never bring the batteries to a full charger... just get 8V batteries, 4 of them. easy.

    what engine/boat do you have? I use 8V golf cart batteries on my boat and each bank of 4 has enough power to crank the big 8V71Ns. a friend of mine as 8V92T and they start fine with the same batteries.

    We have a 66' C.C. Constellation. Power is 8v-71's. We are basically starting from scratch concerning the electrical. The starters and alternators are 32 volt now. I was think of using 2 starting banks of Group 31-1100cca's for starting and T-105's for house. As to charging there are many options available. And as I said I will have the ability to get 12v and 24v if needed.

    Stick with the 32V System or change the whole thing to 24/12V.

    If as you say you are starting the electrical system from scratch you can pretty much change any components you want, can't you?

    if you're starting from scratch then decide on either 24v or 32v although if you're not replacing the wiring make sure the existing wirgin can handle 24v, it should. 12v would be a bad choice on a boat that size, too long wire runs.

    if you stick to 32v, then use 8V batteries, not 12v. as i said, 8V golf cart batteries can easily start 8V71s, they run about $110 a piece from most golf cart speciliasts

    Bad choice on a boat that size. As Kiwi said, either stick with 32 volts or convert the whole system to 24 volts. 12 volt is not feasible on a boat that size and too in-efficient. The generator should be 12 volts and have a 12 volt battery bank with it's own charger and thats where you would get 12 volts from. Group 31's are too small for a boat that size and you should stick to the large 8 volt batteries x 4, or go with banks of 8d's. The 75' Hatteras I ran has 2- 8d's for the starboard 12v71TI and they start it just fine.

    The group 31's were strictly going to be used for starting batteries. If I stay 32 volt, what do you guys suggest for size? The 15-4-1 large 8volt or the smaller Trojan T-875.
    The price difference is huge.

    i use Exide E4800 which are the basic golf cart batt. but 8v. 4 of them crank up those 8V71 or 8v92 just fine... about $450 per bank which is pretty good.

    i have to replace mine soon but they lasted 5 years, also good by florida standard especially with a ferro charger, although i have the charger on a timer running only 8hrs a day to avboid cooking the batteries. the previous set also lasted about 5 years.
