Tried searching this forum without luck.

Can anyone confirm the size of the packing needed for the rudders and 2" shafts? Mine is 1984. Still the original old style compression boxes with the locking nut. Would think most 80's 43\46 Post's have the same.

Looks like shafts would be 3/8"

Rudders - have to measure diameter

How about packing material? Graphite or?? Just starting to research.

    Thank you. Mark.

The packing size sounds about right on the shafts. I like the GFO packing, it lasts a long time and you can tighten it to where you barely get a drip.....like 1 drip every 20 seconds.

    Hi,

    Mine's an 80 with 3/8 packing.

While your in there you should look at the pin that passes through the rudder post to keep the rudder from dropping out of the packing gland.

They wear right through and then only the yolk and steering rod are left to hold the rudder until shaft works it's way out of the yolk and goes for a swim.
