Now that the season is over and we are back on the hard I would like to add a rudder indicator to our Carver 3608. Any suggestions would be welcome as to what to look for and how difficult to install. Thanks and happy holidays to all

Do you have an existing A-pilot already installed. Most mfg's have a rudder angle already on their GUI or easily adaptable remote display available (ie Simrad).
The not-so-smart but reliable Raritan stuff is bomb proof and found on e-bay cheap.

I don't have an auto pilot installed. This will be a complete install. What do you recommend

Have you ever considered an A-pilot? In your future plans? You could satisfy two projects with one purchase.
If you just want a rudder indicator, Raritan Engineering makes a bomb proof little system. Expandable to two stations.

Our Bert came with the Raritan system and an old A-pilot system. We took a lightning strike after we picked up this old Bertram and when the dust settled, the Raritan stuff was the only thing working. Near 10 years later, it continues to work untouched since we picked this ole Bert.

The big deal is running a (shielded) data cable from the rudder post/tiller arms area to your helm. Don't be cheap on the data wire quality.
While your there, run a second spare/future 6 conductor data cable and a coax. Years from now you may thank this idea.
12Vdc at the helm, depending of the style of display, some holes in your dash. Lil grey box under the dash and your installed.

I'm kind of with the "Why bother" school. The rudder position on this boat means nothing when reversing. The props way over power the rudders. Your bow will tell you the position of your rudder real fast in forward, and at idle speed the props will still overpower the rudders.
