The attached pictures shows a 29 x 27.5 Veem Prop that that hit a deadhead in the Pacific northwest. The one blade is bent and is ripped, my question is does any one know of a prop smith that can straighten and weld this prop such that is could be used as a spare slow speed get home prop?
Ouch! I'm not familiar with west coast prop shops, but since it'll need to be shipped anyway the best shops I know of are Frank & Jims in Ft. Lauderdale, Boesler & Sweezey in Bellport, NY and Holland Propeller in Holland Mich.
I second Frank and Jimmys they do excellent work. Also Lauderdale Propellor (also in Fort Lauderdale) is good also and who Vheem uses to fix their props for warranty issues and such in this area.
Thanks guys, Ouch is the operative word, busted my cherry. I'll give these locations a call and see what they recommend. Fred
if you are in the seattle area i would give kruger & sons a call...they have a website that shows their toll free #.
I had Kruger & Sons balance and repair both my props after I hit some skinny water. They aren't cheap (nobody is anymore) but they do most of the prop work for the commercial boats in Seattle. They're good.
Osborne Propeller in Vancouver came back with a very good response, they said they were certified to weld Nibral. The owner is in the process of sending the prop to them for repair. Thanks to all and especially Dennismc.
All: Got the props back last month and Osborne Propeller did a fantastic job on the complicated repair. Thanks Dennismc for the recommendation. Here are two pix of the finished prop. The repaired prop looks identical to the matching prop. Both pix of the repaired prop. Thanks again.
Hi Capt. Fred, have you reinstalled props and sea tested it? I wish you no trouble at all but when I see such damaged caused by a deadhead I am wondering what would happen if there is a crack still inside welded material. Thanks for your feedback!
XavierP, The props have not been mounted, awaiting the right time to pull and install. Will let you know the results. The prop shop we chose is ISO certified to weld Nibral, had experience doing this type of repair and stated they had not had any problems with there repairs. I believe the owner got a warranty. Will post results when the props are installed and tested. Fred
I drove by Osborne Propeller today and thought of this thread... any word on whether the props were installed and tested?
Yes the props have been installed for well over a year and are performing very well. No vibration and boat performance in terms of speed and fuel comsumption is nearly exactly what it was before the accident. I would use Osborne again.
