As many of you know, I take photos for business and pleasure. My quests take me to various marinas, pounding the pavement and wooden docks for interesting shots of yachts and crew. But I also like to seek out obscure shots, something taken from a different angle or taking a small piece of a larger view. Well, on a recent journey, I came across the following situation. On the deep blue hull of a P&J, with the sun just right as it was a few hours high from sunrise, and enough lighting to make out details but with the sun behind to give clear outlines, I caught the shots below. These are in fact reflections on the hull. Almost looking like a mural, the shading and intensity varied as I moved about, looking for my next shot. I realize that captains may see this often, but I thought this was just neat and wanted to capture for a possible new perspective on a usual situation. Enjoy!
Nice shots. The boat to the left on the second picture looks like one I operated winter 2003/2004. G-dock at Bahia Mar?
Norseman, Not sure of the dock letter, but was at Bahia Mar. The boat you are referring to is Shenanigans.
Hmm, wrong name, but some of the details looks quite familiar... The extended aft ceiling over the enterainment cockpit, the sliding glass doors into the main saloon, the covered dink with the crane, etc. My gig was a slightly customized Johnson 70. Did a search on the internet after I saw yer photo: Same name as in the past, but now for sale, 1.6 M. I sure enjoyed driving the boat, Twin MANs, 1300 HP and bow/stern thrusters made by Sleipner @ 25 HP. She would cruise max power @ 29 knots. (But with salt spray flying and no windshield wipers on the covered fly-bridge.. )
Really very nice shots Tom. If I ever make it to coast, I'd like to shoot around a marina too. So I'm just curious, has anybody ever objected to you while you're trying to photograph their yacht? Kelly
Kelly, A number of times I have been asked not to shoot a particular vessel. Case in point, Privacy. Crew member was very nice but asked me not to shoot it. I usually oblige since I do meet these crew from time to time at functions and events. Another time a security guard at the warf in New Orleans told me no photos of the yacht Meduse, although I got a few anyway. When I do get some but have been asked no photos, I will not post them out of respect. Sometimes I get the same results from crew. I take crew photos and at times crew decline, usually stating that the owner is very private and wants everyone to be the same. No problem, I move on. The one thing is I tell people what I'm doing and why and they usually have no problem with it. But you can't always get into and walk around marines either. You may get questioned or escorted out. That happened in New York. Dockmaster saw me walking around with my camera and asked what I was doing. He stated owners don't want people taking pics and I had to leave. Next time, I'll hide it in a brown bag. lol
