For all who like to see whats going on in the harbors around the world can go to this free AIS monitoring website. They overlay real time AIS data (well up to a hour delayed) on google maps.

    www.marinetraffic.com

The data refreshes about every 80 seconds.

    This is really neat.
I can now find out who's in my area.
    Thanks for the link

Another feature I saw is that if you single click as you have your mouse over the ship you can get more vessel information and option to see the vessel track.

I just looked at the site and there are no vessels listed in the West Palm Beach, FL area. I know for a fact that there are several large yachts and a few container ships all transmitting from there.

Yes, I zoomed into areas where I'm sure there were many yachts/boats but not very many shown.
So are these vessels only the ones logged/signed on to this system?

The AIS data is received from VHF land stations with AIS receivers that are then connected to a PC. Which means, depending on the position of the antenna, not all vessels maybe displayed. From what I read anybody can hook into there network and send the AIS data from your local area (see their FAQ).

Does anyone know, when will a new ship send his signs? "Valerie" by Lürssen is launched, but I can't see her current position.

It will only be transmitted when the setup is commissioned, it might also only be transmitting the vessels intended name not the project name if they are different.

The design is nicer than marine-traffic.com, but it seems not useful for a fast overview via Google maps. I can't see Rising Sun in Bremen. I had use the search function to see her place.
