I was driving past Rasselas last night which is docked in the Lyford Cay Marina and noticed a purple light shining toward the car from the top of the boat...it looked kind of like a black light as it made white things glow....does anyone have any idea what this light might be for
If it was a UV flashlight that was used, it wouldn't have had any effect on you except to make your car more visible in the night (if your car was white). Otherwise, UV flashlights are used to detect counterfeit currency and documents, as well as for forensic investigation. Am not aware of any UV light source used for security or defensive purposes. Of course, I may be wrong.
Maybe this is the "Securite night-vision camera on the foremast", as mentioned in another magazine's article on Rasselas.
it looked more purple and more like a black light....i have seen UV lights used for cameras at night and this did not look like that
While uv light can't be seen, a lot of the high intensty bulbs used to produce uv also produce white light. This is filtered out by a thick lens, that is usually what you see with the purple color. Ultravilolet mean beyond violet. it's the wave length longer than violet and shorter than x-rays. its the wave length in the violet range you are seeing. I use uv lights all the time in leak detection as they make phosphor's glow, Its the phosphors in your white shirt that made it glow. Remember when phosphors were added to laundry detergent to "brighten your whites" . This is no longer done because they are harmful to the envioriment. phosphorus in not a phosphor though. Not knowing anything about the yacht, I'll bet it was the a uv light illuminating you for the night camera. Baby monitors use the same thing but the yachts uv would use a much more powerful light & probably use a different wave length for distance.
I was thinking the same thing. But the blue light signifies "owner absent" and the white signifies "meal-time"
You are absolutly correct Ken, my mistake. I was in too much of a rush to confirm which way around it was.
Kevin, that's the Earth's curvature we're looking at silly! It'll get easier when she reaches the brink, just before she falls off the edge...
Ok thanks will you let me know if she comes back there this winter, i did some testing on her in January at simpsons bay and im hoping to come back and clean her .
As many of you know, the Feadship "Rasselas" is for sale and the brokerage company that is trying to sell her has reduced her asking price recently. The 2005-built 62-meter luxury yacht was previously asking 75-million Euros but now has experienced a massive reduction. She is now asking 55-million Euros.
