Hello All, We have problem on windlass maxwell 6000 AC 3 phase 380V, since we bought your boat starboard windlass have 2 problem 1st this windlass running too fast UP and DOWN look like to fast 2st when anchor are up on holding plat (180Kg anchor) windlass going revers and anchor going down 20cm and can't stay in place. we don't have this 2 problem on port windlass. I all ready control phase and voltage all good. this 2 windlass have only one speed. All of you got this problem or know well Maxwell and can give us info? Regards Hugues
I suggest you contact Maxwell directly. If you can include serial numbers and photos of the gearbox and motor including any nameplates will help with determining age and specific details about the windlass. If the windlass is running too fast and is AC it could be one of two issues - incorrect gearbox ratio for this motor, or incorrect motor. Not holding would point towards incorrect gearbox. Serial numbers from the windlass and nameplates from the gearbox could confirm.

So yesterday I made test and look precisely the RPM on each motor, the starboard side running double from port side, 1500RPM port side 3000RPM starboard side so incorrect motor, bad nice day one prevision crew don't bring attention... Sad !!!
Is it possible that you are actually running two speed windlasses and one is running in high speed and the other in low speed?
If a 2 speed motor it would be running at 1500/750 RPM (50Hz supply). This would suggest that someone fitted a 2 pole motor rather than the 4 pole required. The motor speed doesn't explain the backwind of the windlass when bringing the anchor into the pocket. The windlass relies on the self locking function of a worm gearbox to stop the windlass freewheeling. The gearbox could therefore be worn to a stage where it no longer achieves this. Is the motor (or capstan) rotating in the reverse direction when the anchor drops? If they are not rotating the clutches would need adjusting.
was my concern too... wrong engine d'ont explain backwind of windlass I'm agree ! for sure capstan running revers when anchor going down (I don't look at engine but he's on same "gear") so not the clutch from gipsy so CptnMaxwell what you through about this problem? I look RPM form both capstan the starboard side run double so make sense because engine running double too. Electrical engine I found one need 12 weeks. Regards Hugues
Most likely a worn gearbox. If you can find a good gearbox service agent locally they may be able to source new gears. Gearbox looks to be Bonfiglioli VF130 (should be 64:1) - should all be on the nameplate if not painted over. They may also have alternative solution to backwind. Alternative is sourcing entire gearbox from Maxwell or representatives. This has the advantage of output hub being stainless steel for corrosion protection. 12 weeks seems a little long to source a motor. You will be operating at half pull on that windlass also until the motor is replaced. Same power at twice the speed is half the torque. Sounds like you may have inherited a problem that someone ignored for a while. If you tighten the bandbrake a little when lifting the anchor out of the water it may help with the backwind until you get things sorted. Possibly what the previous user was doing. Serial numbers and photos to the manufacturer would still be advised. There may be something about those serial numbers that are different for some reason.
yes a bought this trawler less that a year (he's from 2008) and we discover directly the problem from starboard windlass but really since now we using port anchor and 2 or 3 time both anchor. bandbreake that exactly what we doing since day one but now I have more time and that now time to solve this problem. remplace full gearbox going to cost a lot ... anyway I'm going to take out engine and gearbox to put all on bench and see what is going on. Not going to be nice fun heavy part to take out from hole !!! normally this week I should take out all that and give you news, thanks for you help one my small problem Regards Hugues
