I guess we can all thank the internet for that one. A lot of the major yachting/boating magazines are so much thinner these days because more people surf for what they're looking for instead of buying a magazine.

It was a good magazine. I can see how online and the economy is doing to print publications. Its sad and miss it already.

Print mags going out of business never surprises me.

It's a simple fact... by the time they hit the shelves their "news" is "olds". If someone issues a press release today a website will have it online, front-page within an hour or two... a day at most of they want to flesh it out a little and add their own content. A magazine that gets the same press release won't be able to get that information to their readers for 1 to 2 months.

While I personally like the feeling of a magazine in my hands, I can't justify spending $5-$10 a month per magazine just for the privilege of owning old information that was readily available online weeks or months before.

(And I'm not just saying all that because I'm part of the YF.com staff either...) ;)

The one thing I like about Powerboat is the technical articles. Was going to say that was worth having the magazine for that resource. But than realized any technical issue can be solved on forums like this and probably faster over searching old back issue's. I have probably 20 years worth of magazine materials in my garage. Do not through out magazines because I'm a pack rat with them. Road and Track, Excellence, etcetera to Yachting magazine.

It's a sad day for go-fast guys, but it's really no surprise. Like Zudnic, I had a collection of Powerboat Magazines dating back to the early 80's, but a few years ago I used them to make a charitable donation to the local landfill.

I wrote an article for Powerboat Magazine way back when going fast mattered...

    Bonnier to re-launch Powerboat

    Boating Industry
    Wednesday June 22, 2011
WINTER PARK, Fla. — Just a month after acquiring the rights to the Powerboat brand, Bonnier Corp. has announced it will re-launch the magazine this fall. Jason Johnson returns as editor alongside Bonnier group publisher Jamie Burris, who leads the sales team.

“The next chapter in Powerboat’s storied 40-plus-year history will be an especially exciting time with the Bonnier name behind the ‘World’s Leading Performance Boating Magazine,’” said Johnson, who has worked on Powerboat for the past six years. “We’ll still deliver the same trusted, informative and first-rate content expected in every issue of the magazine, and we’ll soon serve our dedicated audience with new digital offerings.”

“Readers can expect Powerboat to continue its legacy as the brand that performance boaters have trusted since 1968,” Johnson said in a press release. “With new technologies and the Bonnier approach, Powerboat will have even greater coverage of the action-packed, fast-paced boating lifestyle.”

Current Powerboat subscribers will automatically receive the new re-launched magazine.
