Wanted to start a conversation about our furry friends we travel with or have befriended in a far away port. Our family has always had cats. My parents traveled from San Francisco in the 60's on their sailboat to sfl with two cats onboard. Lots of funny stories and some said ones too. I've befriended a few in the Bahamas. Wahoo was a special one for us, she adopted flying fish marina in long island Bahamas as her home. She was fed lots of wahoo scraps from the cutting table by all the fisherman, hence the name. She was born with no eyes but was still an adventurous feline. She fell in the shark infested water once and we saved her from an early demise. Tried to teach her not to come down to the dock but that was futile. The whole marina fed and watched out for her , unfortunately she fell in again today and nobody saw it. She brought smiles to everyone because she was fearless inspite of being blind. Hope to hear about everyone's furry boat friends.
Thru the 18 years we lived aboard Bertie, Quite a pride has rotated thru. My wife's original kats, Her fathers kat, then a friends kitten, finally two yard kittens. The first four have traveled to the Bahamas twice. While on the dock, all allowed to go out but at night, all know to be on board. The solid black kat (Spot) was always watching my back.
The black kat with white vest, Meko, Was our first security kat. Big Orange (Tigger) took over that job. All got around the boat well and loved to explore sand bars at low tide. Just the two white yard kats left now.
One of my folks cat learned to alert them when a fish was on the line. They are helpful when it benefits them!
My very large wolf shepherd hybrid Shilah is going to live aboard my 40' Doral Mediterra with me this summer traveling the PNW and Alaska. It's gonna be a blast.
