I have a paragon transmission and Ford 427 engines. Transmission appears to lose oil when running, but I cannot locate oil leak. Any ideas?

If it's not in the bilge it's in the motor or it's burnt. No good news there. Sorry.

+1. Take both transmission lines off of the cooler, block the one line, pump the otherside up with air and see if it's leaking.

Paragon HJ7's are bronze clutch plate hydraulic forward transmissions, with a band reverse gear. The cooler is likely the place where you are getting a leak. Take the cooler off and let a radiator service outlet pressure test it. A generic cooler is available for replacement if the unit is corroded or leaking.

The second most likely place you will get a leak is from the front seal of the transmission... although you will notice oil in the bilge. Since the front seal is contained inside the bell housing, you may assume it is from the engine.

Parts are still available for the HJ7 from Great Lakes Power, who bought out Paragon some time ago.

    seal leak

came upon this post while searching. Looking at a 1980 CC 350 Catalina with the 350 Q engines. Owner says small leak on port tranmission. If its not the cooler does the engine have to be removed in order t get at the seal????

It's easier to support the back of the engine and remove the gear.
