What is the best route from panama canal to key west fl in a 65' power boat with 500 miles fuel range? Thanks
I'd go up Central America. There's a port in Costa Rica you can get fuel, Roatan in Honduras, Belize City, Isla Mujeres, then across to Florida......Or you could stop in Cuba then Florida although I head checking in and out of Cuba is a royal ordeal.
If you could get 710 miles plus reserve, Montego Bay, Great Inagua and the Bahamas is alternate, it might be a slog up though, I did it the other way and it was 6-8ft on the aft port 1/4 all the way "down".
Looks like Panama to San Andreas to Rotan to Isla Mujieres to Key West hugging coast along Nicaragua and Honduras about 430 miles longest leg mas or menos 9 10 Knts is idle 16/92s came down 8 years ago went Key West to Cayman to San Andreas.we had a bladder than but it's rotted out. We're going form Puerto Vallarta to North Carlonia.
limon - you wont find fuel there unless you have a "agent" that will organize it ahead of time.. they also dont like private vessels there. It is also possible to refuel , but hassles , in puerto vejo in CR and bluefields, corn island in Nicaragua . the route amberjacks1 suggest is a good one , i have done it that way before . keep a look out for honduran fishery/coast guard officials , they in small pangas and look like local fisherman. at first i did not want to stop and let them aboard until there was alot of shouting on the radio .... enjoy the trip.
