I am thinking of painting from the rub rail down using the roll and tip method. What's the best paint for this application. Topside, AwlGrip, or other out there. Been on Youtube and watched a lot of video's and its all over the place. What type of preping is required, Youtube said between 240-400 grit. I was thinking of either Hatteras white of something the the beige family. Does it need primer? All that kind of stuff. The main reason for the painting is one area that was repaired by the previous owner on the starboard side and the paint matching was off due to the age of the boat. I like to see the boat shine again.
Also consider Awlcraft. The Awl products have pages and pages of instructions on the website. A good place to start reading.
Awlgrip products. Want to sand with 220, PREP is EVERYTHING. Then Awlgrip makes it's own reducer for brushing/tipping. Getting the paint reduced enough is the key to a proper job....after you stir it, lift the wooden stirrer out at a 30 degree angle and the paint should run off of it like a coffee pot in full drip/pour.......too thin and you'll get runs to easily, too thick and you'll get grapefruit peel. You definately want to use their primer.
Fantastic. Thanks for posting it. Paint has certainly changed from the messes I made the first times roll & tipping Imron.
Yo Big G ! I have had great results with Interlux Perfection . Simple to mix , easy to use, AND easy to get. I did my whole topside from rub rail up to fly bridge with it. Oyster White , on my Ocean Yachts. I used LOTS of Jen-Polly brushes from 4'' down and white foam 4'' 0r 6'' ''all paints'' mini rollers, yes you can use them when they start to breakdown toss it and grab a fresh brush and or roller and keep on moving! It came out very well. Had to do two coats. I spot painted the fillers and such with the same paint first ( oyster white), then light sanded the spot primed areas and laid down the first coat and so on. I've got two years on it so far in all kinds of weather and it still looks great and is tough as nails.
A good thread on self painting a boat. Has anyone compared Interlux Perfection rolled only vs roll and tip. The rolled only Alexseal looked good on the video...just curious, rolling only simplifies the application.
Cleanslate your doing some serious DIY on your Ocean. How did you handle the large areas by yourself while rolling and tipping?
Go like hell! No direct sun , 50/60 degrees air temp. Low humidity and no wind. I had two rollers loaded and ready to go laid out on the walk around deck and one to start with . Three total. Laid the two rollers , one middle of the deck ready to grab and one on the hatch ready to grab . Through the old roller and handle and brushes in a 5 gallon bucket off to the side. Laid out 2” , 3” and 4” Jenn Foam brushes at various locations on the deck . Started at the widest part first , aft/lower port windows at worked my way forward. Going left side to right side of deck. Roll a 2’ x 3’ section , tip , one , two , three brush strokes stop ; roll another section and so on. Spend a minute or so on a section and move on. Let the paint level out on its own , which it will. The more you play with it , the worse it gets . You have to think it out first before you mix the paint . Have your rollers and brushes ready to go first , laid out in position ready to grab .
I have not had any luck with rolling Perfection only . I tried it , but it did not level off . Looked like Poo Poo.
