    This is my first 'New Thread' and I hope I'm doing this in the right place in the right way.

    Overall, what crew is needed or wanted on a large yacht? For the purpose of this question, assume we're discussing, oh, a 70 meter or so expedition style yacht that the owner wants to explore in, with few long dock periods. Assume that the owner's party is normally 5 to 9. Further assume that the owner entertains small groups (6 to 10) frequently and large groups (50+) one or twice each year.

    Obviously there'll be a Captain, and a pilot will be needed for the helicopter, but what other crew positions are needed? How many positions are 'negotiable' between the Captain and the owner?

    Do the staffing requirements change when the yacht is in Aruba, for example, as opposed to being in Norfolk?

    Can someone point out an online reference that tackles this topic?

    I'm interested to find out what the answers are, because I 'm really feeling good about this lottery ticket. I may have to start hiring.. ;) .

    Hi Dragon, seems as you have got it right so far ;)

    The number of crew can vary depending on who you are and where you are cruising as you say. For big gatherings onboard, you better hire staff from onshore catering companies, same as you do at your house.

    A friend om mine is captain on a 75 m yacht and he described his situation like this;

    "There are 14 cabins for the family, 6 for their personal staff, 12 for domestic staff and 12 for the yacht crew. We have 17 permanent crew to take care of the ship"

    Yachts around 50 m use to have a total of 10-12 crew as a comparison. Depending on the design some yachts need more crew than others to handle and maintain. For maintenance you can also top up with "day workers" when staying in a port.

    It is not unusual that yachts today have two captains and part of the crew depending on the use of the yacht and sometimes also the flag.
