Lump me in the old category cause I remember Betty Cook. Brought back a bunch of offshore memories when I saw the Kevlar Kaama come up for sale. Anyone else on YF that felt the 'need for speed' before your testosterone levels were depleted...? https://www.offshoreonly.com/classifieds/1979-larry-smith-38-scarab-o85093.html
I am one. I have a lot of old brochures left over from the 80s and 90s. I was so sick with it as a kid that I called the factories and asked them to mail them to me. I even thought I was going to buy a fountain 31 and live aboard. When I was 14 or so I was with my mom and dad at broad bay in Va Beach walking past a Pantera 24 (to best of my memory) and the owner asked me if I wanted to go for ride. I looked at Dad and he nodded his head and I hopped in. the guy took me for a ride and even let me drive. He was so nice to a snot nosed kid. When he brought me back my mom told me that my Dad asked the guy if he would take me. God bless the owner and my dad. I eventually (very slowly) grew up and realized how impractical they are, but I still look at Donzi 21s and Magnum 27s for sale.
Was a guest of Mike & Don Aronow in his boat & home on Harbor Island in early life. First go-fast back in the early 70's was an 18 Donzi, next a 16, then a 27 Magnum Spt. followed by a 20 & a 28 Cigarette. First trip to the Bahamas ended my need for speed when introduced to first Blue Marlin. Now I'm feeling old.
I have this voice in the back of my head that still wants me to modernize a Magnum...but weirdly the other voice just met with Frers.
Boat depot in Key Largo has a totally redone 28' Magnum center console with 2-300R Mercury's on the back of it for sale.
That's a sweet boat. In that size range I'd love a Fino. Magnum, 40+, I think. Crazy stupid. But fun. Bahamian commuter....
I had a 27 Magnum Sport in a previous life. Ran good but her two 50 gallon fuel tanks were in the bow and depending on how much was in them they really messed with the ride. Eventually split seams on both; replaced them and sold the boat. Don later came out with the 28 Cigarette. Nearly the same hull but the main 100 gal. tank was mid ship under the floor. Huge improvement. Guy I know up in RI has rare same year 46 Bertram as mine; not listed but wife wants larger boat. Much more practical then any go fast.
Aside of 10-15 years of pleasure "go fast" idiocy, I became driver for the 2000-2003 Superboat International seasons in "Wild Child", a 37' Outerlimits. We snatched "Rookie of the year" and kept the throttles down from there winning many regional and National Championships as well as winning at the Key West World Championships. My neck is still damaged from that shortened course, small craft warning NASTY seas. We actually wont the "overall" beating the cats that had the first start & by far the fastest. We had Wild Child on Duvall St. in front of Ricks that nigh for the now infamous "Miss Wild Child" competition in which the local police had difficulty trying to break up the out of control happenings inside/spilling out the door. The police wouldn't give us a permit to have the boat on Duvall the following year LOL Ah, the good old days. What some people will do for race boat t-shirts
