    I would be very interested in any information anyone has on the following -- a 127 ft 1966 Camper & Nicholsons yacht named "Ocean Liberty", which was completely rebuilt (at a reported cost in excess of $7 million) in 2002 at Bezzina shipyard in Malta under the direction of R.E.D.S Engineering in Verreggio Italy (Rossi Engineering and Design Services) to Llloyds standards and full MCA compliance.

    I would be interested in any insights regarding the yacht, the shipyard and the engineering design outfit. The yacht is for sale in Fort Lauderdale and on **************, and am gathering background (good or bad) as part of due dilligence. Thanks.

    I asume you are either lokig to buy this for yourself or on behalf of someone else.

    I don't know how much of a hurry you are in for this but you could always advertise in the yacht report/ dockwalk and ask if anyone has been involved in the rebuild who would be willing to enlighten you.

    You might also want to be careful about info given to you by ex crew who might have an axe to grind with the boat or Owners.

    A good part of your due diligence should also involve getting the boat surveyed by a reputable organisation. A good understanding of it's current condition is more important than knowing if the varnish was peeling on the cap rails when it went to Malta.

    I often hear the claim that a yacht is "fully MCA and Lloyds" when the claimant doesn't really know what this actually means or understand the difference between the two organisations.

    If it is indeed fully in class and MCA Compliant there are a number of Certificates that need to be current and vaild for this condition to exist.

    I would say even without seeing the boat that if it is truly in Class and MCA Compliant there will have had t be some very large changes to the vessel as a whole to comply.

    Was it built to Lloyds Class rules?

    Do you know what any of it's old names were?

    A Little History

    Thanks K1W1 -- the yacht was built in 1966 by Global Engineering Workd Ltd in South Africa to a Camper & Nicholsons supplied design ( C&N Ltd. Design project A320 according to C&N design registry) for a Mr J. Schlesinger and named Criniera D'Oro when launched. It was 120 ft when launched but has grown to 127 ft along the way. Don't yet have any info on whether it was originally built to Lloyds but suspect yes. Chartered in the Med after completion of rebuild for 2004 season then came to FLL to be put up for sale. Agree with all your other suggestions.

    Still interested in reputation of REDS Engineering and Bezzina Shipyard for purposes of later resale value -- perhaps not much known in the U.S. but probably strong in Europe I suspect.
