hi everyone, I posted awhile back regarding information on ocean yachts 40 and 42. I have started taking interest into the ocean 44. Looking for some info regarding overall construction, ride, and fuel burns with these vessels. Also some pros and cons from owners of the boat. I am looking to upgrade within the next year and have narrowed my search down to the 1990-1995 42. My wife and I love the layout. Besides the length, any pros and cons between the 42 vs.44 We use our boat for crusing, spending 3-4 days on it during the summer. Thanks! Dan
Construction and fuel burn is going to be very very similar between the boats, you're talking about a 2ft difference in length. Not sure on the ride differences.
I believe the 42 is one of the newer generation ocean designs, with improved head sea and following sea ride. the 42 has a more modern layout with the galley up in the salon, while the 44 is a galley down. the 42 has 2 cabins and one head, while the 44 has two cabins and two full heads. both boats are powered by 485 hp 671 detroits, so fuel burn and speed should be pretty similar. So I guess it all comes down to if you want a newer boat, or really want that second head. hope this helps and good luck with your search
I have not moved up yet. Still haven't found the right boat. But I am very impressed with Post. I am in talks with a broker on a 43.
I got a 44 earlier this year and love the boat. I prefer the galley being separate from the salon. My wife and guest love the second head. I know I need to do some turbo work, currently my top speed is 24 kts at 2450, at 18 kts I'm burning about 40 gph. At 8 kts I get 1.5 nmpg. The only negative I have about the boat is that the engines are loud and that is a function of the large throat 485 6/71.
My 55SS is loud too, especially under way. I don't exactly have to yell, but I do have to speak up. If I turn on music, I have to crank it up pretty high (and the bridge stereo is actually really good). I cannot kill the engine noise or the turbo whistle. Closing the hatch quiets it a little bit (just a little, not enough for me to actually do it). After a year on the boat, I'm mostly used to it, but it's a far cry from my newer, quieter Volvo powered Carver 466 in that respect (and just about everyhing else - but this is just about the only aspect the Carver was better to me). Mine has a galley up configuration and I really like it. My galley is fantastic, the best I've ever had on a boat and better than some houses I've lived in. I really like that when I'm cooking, I can be part of the socializing. I initially thought that having the galley right next to the dinette would be messy or diminish from the dinner. It doesn't, it makes it really easy. Having a head per cabin is nice when guests are onboard. It's also nice when you have sons and a daughter. Girls don't like to share a bathroom with boys!
We just got our 84 OY 46...yes the motors are very loud...671 ti...we were cruising 1950/27gph/18kts with 4 bladed wheels before the zf/Mathers controls failed
