  1. Dixon Yacht Design Reveals 'Panamax' Solar Design
Dixon Yacht Design has revealed a new concept for a sleek sailing yacht that is intended for clients who wish to sail sustainably. Sailing yachts on their own already are relatively sustainable given their main form of propulsion in open water tends to be via wind. However, sail yachts still carry a generator and an engine for motoring which still adds to its carbon footprint. The Panamax concept put forward by Dixon Yacht Design aims to reduce this impact further by use of solar.
  2. Firstly the Panamax concept is a 53-meter design which is envisioned to be built using partially recycled aluminum. The design itself is a low-slung and sleek approach and despite this the salon and main deck interior areas are still voluminous thanks to an abundance of glass as well as cut-out bulwarks in that section of the hull. The roof is used as the preferred candidate for the embedded photovoltaics.
  3. The yacht has an 11-meter beam which helps provide the roof with an approximate 80 square meters of solar panel area. To take advantage of the solar power being created, two battery banks harvest not only the solar component but also regenerative energy. The idea is to feature a propeller energy recovery system. The other obvious green aspect to a sailing yacht is its sails and rig. It has been designed with a squared-off top mainsail as the first sail area and then a large overlapping genoa. An off-wind code sail connected to a subdeck furling unit complete the kit.
  4. Interior lavishness has not been sacrificed with internal space representing 476 GT on offer. The yacht boasts guest accommodation in six cabins. There is a bit of a unique arrangement with a "versatile" fifth cabin situated forward of the main saloon. To manage this sailing yacht there is accommodation provided for ten crew members. Cozy yet spacious and light-filled interiors are purposeful. Bulwarks on the aft part of the hull do fold flat to further open the space and tender storage is beneath the foredeck.
