Newport RI Transient Recommendations

    Planning a trip to Newport in late July.

    The choices seem to be either:

    West Wind Marina

    or

    Newport Harbor Hotel and Marina


    These are new waters to me. Anyone have experience with either of these?

    Are they central to what's happening?

    Should we be looking at any other places?

    We always stay at West Wind.
    It is just a few hundred yards past the other marinas but it is really nice.
    We have stayed at the other marinas but choose West Wind now. It is a bit more quiet but still close to all the action.

    The Westwind is located at the most southern end of the harbor. The walk toward the center of the activity is a pretty good hike. Dining located near the WestWind is the West Deck, Scales & Shells and others (both excellent). Additional attractions at the southern end are the Arm Chair Sailor (book store), Team One (boating apparel) and the Newport Restoration School (museum).

    The Newport Harbor Hotel and Marina is more centrally located. Offering a swimming pool, dining on site, easy access to ferries and short walk to Banisters Wharf, Black Pearl, Clark Cook House, Candy Store (night club), and many other shops and restaurants.

    Ferries are available to Providence and Providence Place (large Mall), Jamestown and its quaint village, Goat Island and the docks and the Fort Adams Yachting Museum and the revolutionary fort.

    Newport Ship Yard will have some of the Worlds largest yachts at the docks. Today you'll find Alinghi, Oracle, Whisper and others.

    Very helpful info - thanks.

    We will be 4 couples (no kids for the weekend). Any recommendations for restaurants? Casual attire a must - as is good food... Especially seafood.

    Clarke Cook House & the Black Pearl are the best that we have found right in town but make sure you make a reservation. They get PACKED early.
    West Deck over at West Wind Marina is excellent also.
    wavecruiser is right, West Wind IS at the southern end but we found it to be a very nice, casual 10 minute walk to the center of the action.
    Newport Harbor Hotel might be better for you if you want to be in the middle of things. I have stayed at the warf (dead center of things) a few years ago and although I was only 38 or so & we had a ball at the night clubs, I found it a bit loud back on the boat.

    Dave,

    My wife tried to get a reservation at the Newprot Harbor Hotel and was told they are sold out for all weekends this summer and have been since January! She did get us in at the West Wind Marina.

    I told her she better get working on the restaurant's now or we may be eating all our meals onboard!

    The anchor area, near the buried cable, between Fort Adams and downtown is a nice spot w/ shuttle service to downtown.

    The anchor area, north of the bridge toll booths is a great spot. I use my tender to go ashore and my bicycle to get around. It is a very quiet location, very close to a Mecca of activity.

    personally i think moorings are the way to go in Newport. you get the best view, more privacy,less noise for a fraction of the price. sure you'll run the genny but it's worth it.

    unfortunately, there are only 5 or 6 moorings for boats over 60...

    i've anchored by ft Adams/brenton cove, on the edge of the cable area. holding is very good although it's a little crowded.

    forty one north marina, high end & excellent... service outstanding, has new hotel attached and right in the middle of the action. great rest overlooking marina with outstanding jazz and dancing later... casual attire....


    enjoy.
