First time posting on the board and completely new to Yachts and the industry(my background is in aviation/pilot). I have, however, always had an interest in Yachts and would like the opportunity to start learning/working/enjoying being around yachts.

As I live in Orange County near Newport Beach, does anyone have ideas or know of job opportunities? Any feedback would be great!

Pretty slim pickings on the west coast in general. I used to run and live at Balboa Boat Rental 20 years ago. I also learned to fly out of LGB at Rainbow Air back then. If you are serious, pack up your stuff and head to Ft Lauderdale. It's a bad year to be breaking in, but it's where your best chance is. Also sign up on findacrew dot net

DK if that means no maritime experience or just small boat experience. If either is the case I'd save the money and start on your local docks and yards learning about your proposed craft. I'd also read just about every post on YF for there is a wealth of knowledge here. You can strart by focusing on "crew" in the search catagory.
You're already a couple of weeks late for Lauderdale. Since before FLIBS I'd suspect there are a lot of captains, mates, deckhands and stews pounding the docks down there looking for one of the very few jobs that may pop up. Your pilot quals will be some help, but not much.
My best suggestion would be to take through next summer to learn about the business, maybe work toward some licensing; then start up in Newport, RI making connections with the idea of helping to transport someone south in the fall. That way you'll come into town with a leg up.
Of course, if you can afford a vacation Lauderdale is not a bad place in winter. You will learn there, but don't count too heavily on landing that dream job.

    Still flying in AUS?

Thank you both for your suggestions. I"ll continue to do my research and spend time in Newport. I've been able to learn a great deal just from reading the threads on the board and will continue to do so....

Yeah, last time I lived here I picked up my Aussie CPL and flew Droms on fires. I'm doing a bit of rotor training in the bosses Bell 407, and when we finally get to Indonesia, we've got a Twin Otter on amphibs. Talk the the guys and gals on the Balboa Ferry, they might have some leads, and check with the brokers at Ardell and Frasiers... and see what's on the bulletin board at Minnie's. It's a bad time of year in that area. I'd still suggest you head to Ft. Lauderdale. Also check in with Suzanne Porta, www.sportablecrew.com . There's always work to be had in FtL. You're American so you're legal to hire for day work, and day working is the best way to get known, get experience and network your way into a job. You need to be there though. Phone and internet doesn't cut it.
