Hi folks, I am new here and have a question which may have been covered in previous threads. If so I apologise. I have a Hunter 19 but after heart surgery this year it is doubtful if I will sail her seriously again. Certainly not at sea. My question is regarding removing the fin or part of the fin to allow me to use the boat with an outboard on the inland lochs in Scotland? If I took most of the fin off to reduce the draft and allow launching in the shallow put in points on the lochs I could get a lot of use out of her still and I would like to keep her. Does anyone know if this is possible without reducing the safety or stability of the boat without the mast and sails? Thanks a lot in advance Y-team
Hi, I think you answered this question yourself. Without mast you would not need a fin. What a future owner would say is another matter, but perhaps you can salvage what you remove so it can be used again.
Thanks Hi, Thanks for getting back to me. Maybe my question is based in part on my reluctance to hack off bits of what is in truth a blue water yacht. To be honest though I know that if I do not modify her then I will use her less and less and the boat and trailer would sit in my driveway. Any future owner would be buying a yacht that cannot sail but he would have a great weekender / fishing boat that was once capable of crossing the Atlantic. I don't want to cut off most of the fin and find that she wont straight track through the water or heel over in a wind. If anyone has seen or perhaps carried out a similar modification I would like to hear from them. Thanks Y-team
Hi, Why not sell her as a going concern and buy a 19' Trailer boat to replace it? As for the stability, I was once on a 34' French Built Yacht that was dis masted, we made a 200 NM voyage with the broken mast lashed on deck and it rolled like a cork and was a horrible motion.
I think you will have a better response regarding your boat here: http://www.hunterassociation.org.uk...tion.php?sid=14e2e423d79fbe76be16081a072d90c1
Tried that Hi Kiwi, I have advertised that but it seems she is credit crunched. Had a couple of vague replies but no definite offers so I am exploring possibilities in case I can't move her on. Also this is an old boat (around 1981) and she has seen a lot of use. The sails have seen better days and my grandkids have jumped all over her. Good point though and I will keep trying. Meantime I am still keeping my options open. Many thanks Y-team
