    Hello everyone,

I am a newbie to the larger boat and salt water arena. I am doing some research for a possible offer / purchase. I have grown up on 28’ Carver and have owned several boats, but the largest is 25’ and always in fresh water.

My wife & I are looking to be live aboard for approximately 7 months a year in the Gulf Coast mostly and also on the St. Lawrence river in upstate New York in the summers. I have been looking at the 45’ boats the most and we seem to like the motoryacht’s the best.

I am currently looking at the 2005 to 2008 Cruisers Yachts 455 Express Motoryacht.

I would appreciate any feedback that I could get about the quality, ability to handle higher seas, additional maintenance & expenses with keeping it in salt water, the positives & negatives of owning the 2005 – 2008 Cruisers Yachts 455 Express Motoryacht and are there a lot of this model boats out there.

    Any input is Greatly Appreciated!!!

    Thank you Very Much!
    Kevin

Yes, there are a lot of them for sale. I never owned one, but always liked what I saw and heard. That from someone who likes aft cabin boats. I had a Silverton aft. The Cruisers, in my opinion has a better fit and finish. Cruisers used Volvos on most if not all of these models. I noticed the use of the word "express" - I'm not so sure about that. One dock over from my boat was a couple living aboard this model and they seemed very happy with the boat. I did ask about their Volvos and they had had no problems. Aft cabins require some skill to maneuver in a cross wind. (practice, practice practice). I would not buy one without a strong and reliable (hydraulic?) bow thruster and maybe a stern thruster as well. Higher seas - I have crossed Lake Michigan many times with a group of aft cabins - Sea Rays, Cruisers, Carvers - all in the 37 to 50 foot size range. They were comfortable up to 3.5 foot waves. After that things would at times start flying. After five feet things started to get rough. These boats are tall and have lots of hull and superstructure exposed to wind and wave. A bit top heavy, but for the most part manageable. There have been occasions when we were trapped in Michigan marinas for several extra unplanned days. Days when 45-50 expresses and sailboats crossed the lake. I think they were safe and maybe we would have been as well. But isn't this about pleasure boating?

I was hoping you might receive responses with more Cruisers experience than me, but here's mine:
I had a client, sub capt in USN, for whom I sold his 60' steel trawler. He wanted a boat for the Great Loop and did extensive research. He bought a Cruisers 405 after trips to the yard and more visits while the boat was under construction. He did the Loop and owned the Cruisers for about 5 years. I sold it for him and was extremely impressed with how it held up and surveyed. New owner trucked it to the Great Lakes and was very pleased with family usage there.

Again, limited experience with only one boat and one meticulous owner.
