Hey guys, I wanted to take a moment and introduce myself. I boat on Lake Erie(when it's not frozen!) and live in Ohio. I've only owned a boat for about 6 years now so my experience is fairly limited. I joined about a month ago but haven't posted much yet.....for several reasons. I do all my own maintenance and the forums are an invaluable tool for me. Thanks for sharing the information. I've read where some of the senior members have recommended canceling all new subscribers in the last month due to the "crap" being posted on the Bertram thread. I've stayed out of that mess because I don't have any experience with boats sinking.....I hope I never do! The point I'd like to make is that even though there has been a bunch of new subscribers here in the last month, they are not all without "etiquette".
Hi, Welcome to YF. If you are a genuine poster with an normal sense of curiosity and share the knowledge you do have with others if they are asking questions in that direction you will quickly see that you are accepted by the rest of the members here and will form part of this vibrant online community.
I'm a new member as well and have lurked for quite a long time, I keep in stealth mode primarily because my knowledge base is dwarfed by all of the more active posters here. I'm very pleased with this forum and it's members. 20 years ago, if you wanted information on the subject of boating, or yachts in particular you pretty much were limited to library books and magazine subscriptions. Knowledge was difficult to gain and was delivered in small portions over great lengths of time. Now, with the Internet and a forum such as YF, it's like being in a stadium filled with experienced Captains and owners all talking at once. It's a bit of sensory overload but quite marvelous. I greatly appreciate the intellectual generosity of the members of this forum. Cheers! ....Richard
Welcome to YF Kindredspirits and N6ERH. The Bert thread brought along several posters with agendas or just filling space. I think those types will bore easily and fall by the wayside (and some will be uninvited). Although I don't posess the knowledge of some members such as K1W1 and Marmot I hope I contribute some knowledge to the Forum as I've found even the most novice boater can also do. IMHO no moratorium on posters is needed. It all shakes out. Sometimes "dumb" questions come up and that can frustrate people, but this is a great place to learn.
Welcome to YF, indeed a wonderful resource for all dont' be shy about posting and dont' be intimidated asking questions. there is no such a thing as a stupid question, just stupid mistakes made because the question wasnt' asked... lots of knowledge to be shared and we all learn something by discussing things. heck, 30 years ago i was pretty clueless...
What do you mean 30 years ago? Lol - just trying to bring some levity back to the forum. Welcome newcomers. As Pascal said, don't be shy posting. Tell us what you have, where you boat, your latest issue, etc and join in. Too many folks think they can't post because they're too green, nonsense. Ask away, share some of your own insights or even a funny story or so. Post a photo of your ride. Pretty soon you'll be senior members like us (in posts, not in years hopefully). Oh yeah, and make good use of the search function, as much information has been contributed already. And feel free to buy a round at the next boat show.
Hi, Welcome to YF, I sure am glad that you don't include the Engineers amongst the membership in that chicken cackle that has overloaded your senses to date. Is N6ERH your Ham Radio Handle or the Tail No of an Aircraft you are associated with?
Forgive my ignorance, what is a Ham? Only one thing comes to mind when talking about a ham...I think I may be hungry at this point!
It means amateur or non-professional. Sadly it is often used in a derogatory way when, in fact, most operators are highly skilled and knowledgeable. Which is why I asked if N6ERH gained his knowledge in subs – based on his avatar. BTW Ron, you're up early for a Saturday morning. What is it, 7am over there?
To the new members, While not a senior member, I have been around this forum for a few years and I usually look in every day or so. You will find that it is not as busy as some of the other sites, but you will find the comments and discussions professional and informative. Some of the senior members are very experienced and often share knowledge that you don't see elsewhere. The site is moderated well so I expect that any serious new members will not be affected. This is a valuable resource.
I hope you don't wish to kick all the newbe's out. I see a lot of names here from other sites I go to and want to soak up all the good info I can.
I can't speak for Carl or the YF's Admin Team, but I'm pretty confident in saying no new members are going to be banned or have their memberships canceled for those that register in the forum and participate in the groups of interest, other threads, reviews, discussions, etc. are always more than welcome. Members who register to contribute witch unfounded theories, flames, false claims, facts or representation in the Bertram thread should expect their membership and their intentions to be examined. New member? Boating / Yachting enthusiast? Have a boat? Looking to get one? fan of large boats? All of which I'm sure are more than welcome to contribute. Again, not speaking for Carl, but pretty confident that the new member issues were specific to the new registrations in the Bertram thread and moderating the wildfire within that topic.
