LOTS of new launch entries greeted me this morning! But it doesn't seem that vee can post on most of those. So I suppose here in General Yachting is the appropriate forum??? Anyways, I was taken with the new Horizon 62. In my view the main suite window in the hull side is the "just right" size. I like this treatment much, much better than the oversize hull windows seen on many recent Italian yachts. Hey, everybody chime in here, so many new yachts! Kelly
Hi Kelly, I need to explain why so many new launches were uploaded today... First - a few of them were previously posted by YachtLuver and I have corrected or edited them to fit our format. Ron has helped me tremendously in gathering news and he's using this opportunity to hone his skills as a writer. I think he's doing an excellent job. Second - we KNOW that yachting magazines around the world are using YachtForums for the latest news, story ideas and the collective knowledge generated by our members. We know this because I've logged their IP addresses. On any given day, I watch these little rodents scamper about looking for morsels of information to further their bottom line. Third - Because of our work (that includes YOU, ME & EVERYONE ELSE who contributes to YF), we've attracted a good number of yachting's most experienced people. Often, we find ourselves in the position of hearing about news from these members long before the magazines or other medias get a hold of it. For these reasons, I'm being more selective about the times that I upload.
All cool stuff to know about Carl. But I assume that commentary from peanut gallery should be posted here in the General Yachting forum. Not the Newest Builds and Launches, or other forums? Kelly
Exactly. And I'll expand a little... I believe manufacturers have embraced the internet, specifically forums, because it provides an unbiased gauge of consumer acceptance, as well as fertile grounds for grass root intro's. But, I believe it's inappropriate to have follow up comments beneath press releases, news & such. I've seen this done on some other sites and in my opinion it's unprofessional.
Carl, Nevertheless, the new launch entries were very welcome! I felt like getting hit by a train when I accessed the YF website this morning. Thanks, Arnie
WOW! Lots of new stuff here today. Kind of gets you in the mood for boat show season (yes, there is a season for boat shows and we folks down here in South Florida look forward to it. It supplements the other two seasons we have down here: Hot and Hotter). Thanks for all the cool info. Will take some time to get through it all.
The new Feadship concept is a heck of a surprise! I won't say it's my cup of tea. But at least finally somebody is challenging Wally for radical design. Gutsy move by Feadship ... Kelly
There's been a few challenges over the past year or two (Marco Polo for example), but mostly just renderings from design studios. I have to wonder if this is another design exercise, or an actual concept that's being considered as a legitimate build. Personally I like it a lot (I'm sure everyone's surprised to hear me say that! LOL). The hull is very much styled like an IMOCA sailboat, while the super-structure (if we can call it that) has a great retro-future, steampunk, feel to it... almost like an inverted gondola on an airship. Look at the picture upside down, you'll see what I mean.
IMHO, when we have to look at the renderings upside down, we are doomed... In one of the Sunday funnies, there are two kids in church, one of whom pokes fun at the outlandish hats worn by the ladies--this Fead is reminiscent of one of those. Yes, I am a retro-grouch, BTW, and proud of it. And, no, I don't have hair growing out of my ears (yet).
BINGO! When I wrote the review on Feadship's X-Stream Concept (seen here) , I felt like I was waisting words. At this point, I seriously doubt any legitimacy. The cost to commission a wild model is CHEAP compared to the cost of maintaining ads in mags. Feadship knows these far-fetched fakes will get more attention, and more published pages, then any review their money can buy. I seriously question if we should provide ANY coverage for "X-Stream" concepts... pun intended.
Carl, it's not a waste of words. I enjoy just as much reading about revolutionary concepts as just-delivered real boats. These designs push the boundaries and even if they never get built, tons of ideas incorporated in them will make it onboard future yachts. Very much similar to the idea of concept cars in fact. Bruno
I'm with Bruno on this one. While I'm quite skeptical as to whether or not the X-Stream will ever be built (especially by a company as conservative as Feadship), it's still extremely interesting to look at. What's really piquing my interest is this sudden trend in sailboat hulls minus their keels and masts. Wally was the first to run with the idea as far as I know, but now we also have this X-Stream concept, as well as the Vitruvius project from Perini. Mind you, it's not surprising to see a design like that coming from a yard famous for their mega-sailors. Something else of note... take a look at the Vitruvius, and compare it to the two Wallys below: Wally 55: http://www.*********/Upload/5/55mWP01.jpg Wally 50: http://www.*********/Upload/W/Wally_50_m_01_prev.jpg
Nah. Anything that fires a few neurons is not wasting words Carl But like you, I'm not holding my breath on the launch ... Kelly
