  1. Converting a Chinese Research vessel into a luxury yacht

This design is the last project from the five finalists of the "Young Designer of the Year Award". Matthew and Kyle describe their project in the following manner. When approaching the task of converting a Chinese research vessel into a modern luxury yacht, we aimed to develop an elegant and realistic design while maintaining original features in terms of both styling and manufacture.

Exterior features include a unique ducktail and aft beach design, an extensive forward pool and bathing area, and a multipurpose flybridge with a bar and hot-tub. The yacht also features several exterior dining areas. The main feature retained from the donor vessel is the funnel, which we have redesigned to be more modern and to feature prominently within the yacht’s interior. The aft-facing open plan saloon is a sophisticated living space which boasts a chic bar cut directly from the exterior funnel and also features a lowered seating area. Dual height creates a feeling of two rooms and provides an intimate atmosphere for entertaining. A glass ceiling, which is also an exterior feature, optimizes the flow of light throughout the yacht and creates an even greater feeling of endless space.
  2. More than half the perimeter of the stylish dining area is open to the adjacent deck. This brings the feeling of outdoor dining inside while providing all the luxuries of indoor entertaining. Floor-to-ceiling sliding windows mean this area can be enclosed completely during inclement weather. Here the yacht’s funnel is used to create a large contemporary dining table and the combination of luxurious materials and colors creates a unique focal point. In keeping with the stylish design, the master cabin boasts large windows and fold-down beach platforms for optimal views. Gentle copper features and eye-catching woodwork blend with the functionality of the room and the stunning bed becomes a focal point. A walk-in wardrobe and roomy dressing area provide additional space and luxury.
