I own a 35dc Catalina that has been stored for several years and has badly laquered gasoline . Do not want to change out the galvanized tanks. But at this age (1978) I am afraid that the galvanizing might be flaking off any recourse ? Will gasoline filters do the job?
As far as flaking stuff goes, yeah, a good filter will stop it, question is, how long will you get between clogs? What are your plans for cleaning the tanks of the varnished fuel? How about the fuel lines and everything else? Sometimes in these situations, the best solution is to just bite the bullet and change out the whole system. Without doing that, you'll always be in a questionable state, and the last thing you need is to be coming in from rough weather (where everything gets stirred up and stuff comes loose) and lose the engines to a clogged filter or jet as you're crossing a bar or coming in a rough entrance. If you only boat in places where reliability isn't a a key issue in safety, you can try to clean up the system, but in even those circumstances, I'd suggest you set in a parallel filter set that you can just throw a couple of valves and get on a new one rather than having to change it to get running again.
Thanks for the reply .I have thought of replacing the tanks with the poly tanks that are available or at least steam cleaning existing tanks to inspect there current condition. Parallel filters are just a good idea. I also have thought of using stainless steel lines and valves. The carbs have been rebuilt about 18 months ago before i bought it.This year will be the first time in years this has seen water and not sure what to expect. Thanks again any other info appreciated RevDave
