In 1976 while station in the Coast Guard, I was certificated in Hawaii as an open water NAUI diver. Recently, my wallet was stolen and I submitted information to NAUI HQ for replacement certification card. NAUI HQ stated that they had no record of me being certificated. I contacted a local 5 Star PADI dive shop I have been dealing with in Florida since early 1990s and in their customer records my NAUI date of completion and certification number is on file along with 35 air fills I have on account. NAUI HQ called this store to confirm same but then stated they needed the instructor's number, which was not recorded. Thru perserverence, I found the now retired instructor but NAUI had no record of this individual being a NAUI instructor, even though this person was on the NAUI Board of Directors for many years and is in the NAUI Hall of Fame. NAUI also stated that when they moved HQ from California to Florida years ago, that many diver's records were purged, discarded, lost. They now have contacted the retired instructor who remembers teach this course but they still refuse to issue me a replacement even though I have provided date of certification, cert number and empirical evidence that I, in fact, am a certificated NAUI diver. I also had applied for a replacement card in late 1980s before the NAUI move to Florida and received same at that time, no problem. If you were certificated between NAUI's inception and it's move to Florida, it is wise that you contact them to insure that your records are on file. It is my hope that NAUI rectifies my situation and corrects what is a huge quality control and probable PR problem. I have now submitted this information to the current NAUI BOD and will advise the outcome of this dilema.
Long struggle well, it was like pulling teeth, but they finally relinquised the replacement card. problem solved
