At our current rate of registrations, I'm projecting we'll eclipse 20,000 members on Thursday, March 25th, 2010. As we enter our 7th year, here's some other membership milestones...

    10,000 members on December 6th, 2007.
    14,232 members on December 31st, 2008.
    18,700 members on December 31st, 2009.

Membership numbers provide no real measure of a forum's performance. The real value lies in the collective knowledge the forum has accumulated. It's interesting to note, many of our first year members (and there were only 200 or so) are still active today. I think this speaks volumes. Seven years later, some of these same people continue to contribute and return for the latest diatribe.

Thank you for allowing Lars, Kevin and myself to guide YF along the way. More importantly, thank you for allowing us to be part of something much larger, something that's had an impact on the passion we all share. :)

    YF folks,
Congrat's as well from here. You provide an informative, genteel (for the most part) site for those of us that have the "disease". From the mega yacht reports to the ever expanding Roamer discussions, it's all good. I look forward to checking in on a regular basis to see what's up.
Thank you all for your continuing efforts to provide me with my daily "fix".
    Peter.

It's always great to be associated with the best team in an industry or sector.
Congrats to Carl, Kevin and Lars for their success and for giving us the opportunity to share our boating knowledge and experience with others. I've made new friendships, learned a bit about things that float and been able to share my insights with folks that want to listen.
    Cheers!

Well done Carl and Team. It's a site I look forward to visiting and contributing to through my daily or weekly webcrawling.

Congratulations Carl, Lars and Kevin. All your hard work has paid off and you have produced what is, without doubt, the premier yachting forum on the web. Here’s to the next milestone!

    Hi,

Congratulations Carl and the boys for running such a great site.

I was looking at the numbers posted and wondered why there has been a hug spike in new members since Jan 01 2010 compared to previous years.

If 10,000 was reached on December 06 2007 and then by December 31 2008 some 12 months and 25 days of 380 Days we had 14,232 this gives an average new membership of 11.13 a day.

The next December 31 shows an new membership increase of 4468 for the preceding 12 months or 365 Days this gives an average new membership of 12.24 a day, a slight increase on the previous year.

Then along comes 2010 and in what is expected to be by the bosses calcs the first 84 days the ranks of new comers has or will swell by 1300 which is an astounding average signup of 15.4 new members every day.

Given that the current Membership Totals ( Carl when ya dump someone does this no go down?) 19,913 the forecast target is readily attainable with the current subscription fever sweeping world.

Keep up the great work guys and gals, it is good to be part of such a vibrant and diversified online community.

Yes, from Jan, 1st to the projected 20,000 member mark of March 25th, we will have added 1300 new members. It is a significant jump over year's past.

New registrations generally peak during the summer months, but January 2010 was the largest spike we've recorded with 617 new members. Here's a screen shot of my control panel showing monthly registrations since January 2006...

Removed memberships are not included in the count. If they were, we would have well over 40,000 members. Before I installed a script to control bots early last year, I was removing about 40-50 a day and this number was increasing. This went on for 2-3 years before we got it under control.

For actual humans that spam YF, we remove an average of 2-3 daily. Some days more. This has been continuous since our inception, but has been increasing lately and becoming more sophisticated. This has spawned an entirely new business model, where people are paid to infiltrate forums, posing as interested members with certain (usually limited) knowledge. Within a few posts, they begin 'leading' a discussion until the inevitable link is posted and we catch 'em in the act. After 7 years of 24/7 behind the keyboard, spotting spam has become almost instinctual, but we still get tricked by some.

Carl, congrats to you and the boys for making this what it is. There is a depth of knowledge here like nowhere else. I’m very proud to be here from the beginning.

    Carl,
Where are we meeting for the celebration? I think we should plan something for Friday. This time we buy you one. Let's see, 20,000 members, one per member, you are in trouble my friend!!

Oh Crud, don't say that. I've just got a good client to sign up (Piers). I thought we might win him one of those YF polo-shirts.
