MEGAYACHT SINKS IN BAHAMAS

    On January the 14th the new launched 38 m expedition yacht, "ELECTRA" built by by Austral (www.austral.com), ran on to a reef just before entering the channel to the Lyford Cay Marina in Nassau, Bahamas. The boat was being driven by its Italian owner who claimed an engine stalled and the boat drifted onto the reef located just east of the channel’s outer marker, but others speculated from seeing the damage to the propellers and diving around the boat that the boat was at cruising speed when it hit the reef and that the owner was entering the narrow channel from the wrong side of the marker. Everyone on the boat was rescued thanks to the heroic effort of some local residents of Lyford Cay but the boat was completely ruined, much of the aluminum whole was ripped open and the boat was completly flooded. The boat has been sitting on the reef ever since. Last week a large barge and crane arrived from Florida to lift the boat out of the water but after many attempts it was unsuccessful. On Sunday (Feb. 5th) "Ecectra" split in half and is still out by the outer marker. See the attached photos.

    For me she is or was an interesting yacht (I was thinking about her design as an shadow boat in a larger version) :(

    However, I thank you for this news.

    Bit of a mess, wonder how long before it appears on Ebay (1 careful owner):D

    Not knowing much about the subject of structual engineering. Could this be a design fault?? Surely a yacht shouldn't split in half like it has, I would have thought the bow would have taken the brunt of the impact.

    The boat was sitting on the reef for three weeks so along with the waves beating against the hull and the crane's failed attempts to lift it up caused the hull to crack and eventually brake in half.

    With all due respect to everyone on this board....I did not post the news of Electra sinking as a joke but rather for everyones' information what happened to this brand new boat who's engines failed causing it to crash on to the reef and I don't see why there has been constant ridicule and jokes being posted about this very unfortunate event

    On behalf of ALL of the participants in this thread, please accept my apologies. I agree with your sentiments. This is a very unfortunate situation.

    For the most part, we're pretty serious about yachting around here and generally keep the tongue-in-cheek remarks to a minimum. The Electra situation is clearly not the right place for this.

    I agree that a yacht having bad luck isn't a funny situation, but you have to admit, a nice new vessel breaking cleaning in half is at the very least dubious.
