    Can someone help me choose the right sportfish boat? I’m in Market for used sport fishing boat. I’ve doing some research for the past few weeks I end up with some boats ike Hatters, Bertram, Cabo, Luhrs. Looks like they are all nice boat but can’t quite decide which one to buy. Also which diesel engine is more reliable & trouble free ?

    Choosing the right boat depends on a variety of factors. What is your intended use? Are you going to stay local, make a few trips to Catalina during the summer? Fish long range? Extended trips to Mexico?

    Hatteras and Bertrams in that size range will be older, slower, flybridge models. Cabo and Luhrs are available in newer, faster, flybridge and express models. What are your preferred model years, and budget?

    thinking about doing some tuna fishing and some local fishing as well trip to catalina i have a 25 ft wellcraft coastal i have no problems going catalina, but few more friends wants to fishing just dont have enough room

    What is your price range as well as answering the other questions. Are you mechanical and capable of fixing things on an older boat, is a certain cruise speed important?

    I’m expect to spend around $ 150,000 to $200,000 And I guess I have some Little knowledge working on Engine or any Electric stuff since I was working for Ford dealer for 9 yr on Heavy Duty Trucks . It will be nice to have around 20 knots cruise speed.

    Probably not a very useful exercise for any of us to tell you which boat to buy. We all will have different ideas. Just a suggestion, do some shopping for yourself, eliminate some of the brands that don't fit your needs, identify the ones that do, then come back on the forum with specific questions on specific boats. Might be more informative for you that way

    I would stay away from Luhrs as their build quality is not the best. In your price range, I'd be looking at a Cabo 35'. It's built like a tank, will be the newest of the bunch in your size range (except for the 36' Bertram which I wouldn't consider.) and the fastest of the bunch. Older Hatteras' and Bertrams are good boats also. The 36' Hatteras SF, while beit is a bit on the slower side and the turbo one's should cruise 20-22 knots, is a very large boat for it's size. Bertram built a few in that size range such as the 35' and 38. I would be looking at diesels only, due to the range, fuel efficiency, and longevity/reliability.

    Thanks for the Info Capt. J OK i did some research on the boats I got it down to 2 different boats. One is 36’ Riviera Convertible with Cummins Engine model 370 & 35 Cabo Fly bridge with Caterpillar 3208T
    I’m going to see the both boat this weekend. Thanks Again Guys

    Both are good boats and depending on your choices could serve you well. The Cabo is stronger built and a better sea-boat than the Riviera.

    Where there not two hulls of the Cabo 35.
    The first by Lou Codega they say is wet as a submarine and the second by Michael Peters (from 2000 onwards) is dryier and much better, but slams more then the first in a head sea. Now the 35 is replaced by the 36.
    I would also look at the Albemarle in that list, there 360 if you looking for an express is a lovely boat. Albermarle built also a 325 Convertible Flybridge 36 feet LOA, but may be this would be a bit too small for you, seeing the criteria above.

    The OP's budget - in southern California - will likely keep him in a pre 2000 35' Cabo Flybridge... and out here Albemarle's are few and far between.

    The 31' was wetter than a submarine. The 35 was just wet. Yes there were 2 hulls, however the expresses tended to be much wetter than the Flybridge boats. It's hard to have a 35' that isn't wet. I would also look at a Carolina Classic 35' as it's a phenominal riding boat, but chances are there aren't any on the west coast.

    If I was in Southern CA and considering a sport fish, I might contact Seaboard Marine and see if any of the Diesel Repowers of nice Bertram's or Hatteras boats they have done might be for sale.
