For the past two years I've been working on my 1981 Carver Mariner 3306. She's a great live aboard for weekends on the water and she cruises pretty good too. I've rebuilt a half dozen boats over the years and I do all my own work, so I'm pretty handy on all aspects of marine repair. There is one issue that has stumped me though, since the day I got the boat the fuel gauge has never worked. I've changed the float/sending unit in the tank and replaced the gauge, but no luck. The needle doesn't move at all. When I test the gauge the needle jumps to full as it should, but it will not read the sending unit. Could I have a wire break somewhere?? Any suggestions??? Thanks
If you're grounding the (pink) fuel sending unit wire to the (black) gauge ground and the gauge pegs, then you have continuity to the gauge. Simple as that. You also need to have a 12v+ source of power going to the gauge for it to read, which it gets from the ignition switch's "ON" position. More than likely that's where you're problem lies. Check for 12v+ to the gauge with a test light.
