For years I've seen certain vessels referred to as "M/V Whatever" wondered about the M/V designation.

What qualifies a vessel to be referred to that way? Is it size, tonnage, etc?

Thanks for that link. It cleared up a couple of questions, but still doesn't answer my question of why come vessels are referred to by the "M/V" designation, and others that are in the same size/tonnage category are not.

I understand that M/V stands for "Motor Vessel" but can you 'splain to this poor country by why it's used on some boats and not others?

On Yachts, it is mostly the choice of the owner to use either MY or MV, on ships, who knows??

Thanks Dennis. That's kind of what I thought and the answer I was looking for.

It's sort of the boat/yacht thing. A Motor Yacht is also a Motor Vessel, but a Motor Vessel needn't be a yacht. Often it's advantagous to be specific about what you are, other times there's no need. IOWs you might want a marina to know you're a yacht asking for a slip and not a crewboat, but when trying to hail a tug he might not be inclined to communicate with M/Ys.
