We are planning this year to upgrade our 60' coastal cruiser to a passage maker to do off shore and long range cruising. We have been looking at Nordhavn, Horizon and Outer Reef. Does anyone have any first hand experience with the Outer Reef with long range and ocean cruising? Anyone hear of any experience with the Outer Reef company? We love the Nordhavn but feel we need something that you can access a bit of speed to get away from storms etc if necessary. Outer Reef people were very helpful at Fort Lauderdale and we liked the 70' but it's a mine field trying to get honest reviews from unbiased sources! Any info, insights would be greatly appreciated. Interesting forum. Thanks.

I have heard good things about the build quality of the Outer Reefs, other than that I know nothing. If you do something along the lines of the Nordhaven, Northern marine builds a very nice boat that can handle just about anything.

You might consider doing some research on hull forms. Full displacement vessels will provide better sea keeping capabilities for offshore passages than semi-displacement hulls; they also tend to have greater tankage for fuel; and of course better fuel economy since their speeds cannot exceed their hull form. Perhaps change your mindset from outrunning a storm to avoiding them when possible and handling them when not.

There are numerous builders of quality full displacement yachts, trawlers, that will provide stability, range, and bluewater capability in rough seas.
