Hi. As soon as I'm released from the "asylum" I am taking on a restoration of a 60 foot wooden boat from the '40s. I am thinking of decommisioning the diesel tanks which are behind the aft cabin and would be very dificult to simply replace. Would there be any problem with locating a new "poly.." one (or two) in the engine room? There is plenty of room as there is a single diesel. Thanks
With out knowing your model and a whole lot of other specs, it would be hard to give an exact answer. However, in just a simple guys conversation, You could put properly vented diesel tanks just about anywhere. Personally, I'm not a fan of those Poly tanks. With some simple guy reasoning, I would shop for some properly baffled metal or glass tanks. Balance and trim (CG) are important considerations also. Just think safe, you, your family and friends rely on your safe decision. When in doubt, consult a surveyor familiar with fuel system modifications. ,rc
Rcrapps is on the money with his last three sentences. It's not a matter of where the tanks will fit. It's a matter of what that 7.15 pounds per gallon will do to your stability and ride. I suspect moving them forward will make a big change in how your vessel moves through the water and could change your CG. BTW, isn't the assylum the place you get sent to AFTER you get involved in a restoration project?
Thanks for the great input. I've decided to take out the old and replace with the new in the current location. You're right about the "asylum." However, since I know I won't have time for anything once this project begins I thought I would get that part done first!
