    Hello everyone,

I'm totally new in the world of yachting and don't know where to start learning the basics about this exciting industry. After hearing for few yrs, I eventually went to the Dubai boat show recently, thoroughly enjoyed it and decided to get into this field from an investment perspective. Problem is I never invest in anything for my clients (or myself) without doing a good old homework.

Would appreciate any comments re. how I can enhance my knowledge about yachts (eg. the yacht-making process, following the yacht market, financing issues, main parties involved, etc, etc). Got few yacht magazines which are full of adverts but thats really it! Apologies in advance for such a basic question but hopefully I'll get some guidance in the right direction. Thank you

Hey Dubai99 welcome to the YF. Being in the yacht industry or at least being an enthusiast is interesting and rewarding i would imagine because it is what we like to do. Here on YF there are endless ways to learn about yachts and the industry. Just take part in the threads and posts and you will learn along the way. I guess since you wanted to get into the industry itself from a job point of view, you should have done your HW and not the other way around!

Learning more about the hobby & not to get a job.

Many thanks for your msg. Sorry but what I meant was to get into this industry to learn more about this newly acquired hobby (not from the job's angle at all).

I appreciate your reply and think you're right in suggesting to follow the YF and by time I'll be able to learn the basics.

    Kind regards,

I think the one or the other book about superyachts can help.

I've got the book "Superyachten - Luxus unter Segeln." from the Delius Klasing publishing house. The book is in German, but I'm sure this book is in English too. That must be the title "Luxury Yachts - The world of the superyacht." by Svante Domizlaff. There are famous people of the superyacht industry who written an article.

    Here is a short description:

Another book that may help give you some perspective of the upper end of yachting is "Megayacht Wisdom II - The Handbook for Yacht Ownership" by Bubby Haack & Doug Hoog. Bluewater books & Charts carries it. You can find them at bluewaterweb dot com.

    Hello Dubai and welcome.
Regarding your comment about the investment perspective, are you trying to determine if you should invest in a yacht that goes on the sharter circuit, and make money that way? Or are you interested in investing in a yard/builder or owning a yard outright? You can own a yacht that charters, and use it yourself for a period of time during the year, or just run it under charter all the time. Maybe a few charter captains will give some insight here as to if a yacht can really make money (read: sufficient and sustained income).
BTW, there's no better forum that can answer your questions.

Trust me Dubai, when i first got interested in yachts i knew nothing besides knowing what a yacht looks like and that many of them are beautiful, that's about it. But joining this forum, the guys here really helped me out to understand lots of aspects, technically, yards and everything. Just your everyday conversation and participation on YF will help you tremendously. I tell you, you learn alot in the most fun ways...it is the best yacht forum on the internet.

    Dubai,

You have found the best internet resource right here. I would also suggest the you subscribe to some yachting magazines, such as The Yacht Report or Showboats International. You will have a wealth of information as to what is going on in the industry.
