Well, the IBS show season is about to kick off, with Southampton right around the corner!

I was wondering, as i am not able to get to boat shows outside the UK at the minute, if we could get a group of members together who are going to shows in the next few months to share their collection of photos, on CD. I am willing to share mine from Southampton, would anyone who is going to the Monaco, Ft. Lauderdale, Germany, etc. be able to do the same. If we can get a large collection together maybe we can exchange each other's photos.

Either we could do it over the forum or privately, by sharing individual photos from shows, it will certainly give people more of a personal view of the boats at shows they are not able to attend.

If people are interested in doing this then post here so we can arrange names and shows or PM me. The more people we can get for each show then the more comprehensive a catalogue we can organise.

Maybe... as an afterthought... we can put it together as a YF 'thing' so with a small donation to assist in the running of YF and a dvd burnt of the photos can be mailed out. That way the folks who can't get to any shows have an opportunity to see the boats close up.

    What do people think?

Boat show reports are a common theme on other boating sites. Often somebody just starts a thread on the show he has just seen and loads it up with his photos. In a few cases they will go so far as to put together a gallery of photos on their own web host. Here is an example of one that I did (but little bowriders only, no yachts!) -

I agree with what you say about online hosting, but when it comes to it, there are people who take well over a hundred photos (me for one! ) and therefore would be far easier to package them together on a disc, as i do myself. Also an online database of photos would not always be accessible, i know i would reference to something from a cd next to my computer easier and more reularly.

With the size and popularity of this forum, i think maybe it can gain more interest, i know i have search for non-company photos in the past, and if we (as in YF) can offer this, surely it can only be a good thing for the users and YF! :D

[gets down off high-horse  ]

Good point on the number of photos being a factor. I am very selective in what photos I take. Since I know I will be hosting them, and bandwidth is an issue. Which it would not be for a CD. Main difficulty with the CD approach is simply distribution to the users.

I will place the pictures here, or you might want to consider publishing then at some p2p like shareaza?

Thats not a bad idea. If there is somewhere where we can upload large files, maybe if the photos are zipped in files of a certain size and then users can download them when ever they want?

Carl, would there be an option to upload to the YF servers and then only members can download the files? Password protected or something! ?

As long as you are using an online host, simply copying photos from an online gallery is easy too. Zipping photos won't save you much bandwidth, if any at all. JPG photos have compression built in.

Sure, however, downloading 1 zip file would be a lot easier than right-click, save file as... for many photos ;)

Anyway, back to the original idea. Are people willing to exchange photos on cd?

I may seem a little pushie on this, but i really want to get a close-up view of other international shows, and i'm sure there are other people who would be able to join in too?

    Sure.

I have around 500 pics; not that many superyachts though, but a nice insight in the Dutch yacht origin.

Good point Jon. Their may be gallery sites that provide for selecting whole collections of photos for downloading. But most do seem to only allow a single photo at a time. Of course an FTP transfer can handle multiple files. However FTP requires issuing permissions to individual users. Which would be a pain for the Admin. There are photo hosting and stock photo sites that go beyond the usual home gallery though. I bet some of them could provide for downloading whole photo collections. Some examples of these sites are www.FotoTime.com and www.istockphoto.com

    Thanks Tantetruus!

The main boat shows coming up in the next few weeks are as follows:

    * Festival International de la Plaisance, Cannes, France: 14-19 Sept
    * Southampton International Boat Show, UK: 16-25 Sept
    * Monaco Yacht Show, Monaco: 21-24 Sept
    * Genoa International Boat Show, Italy: 08-16 Oct
    * United States Powerboat Show, Annapolis, USA: 13-16 Oct
    * Barcelona International Boat Show, Barcelona, Spain: 22-30 Oct
    * Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, Ft Lauderdale, USA: 27-31 Oct
    * Hanseboot International Boat Show, Hamburg, Germany: 29 Oct-06 Nov
    * Schroders London International Boat Show, London, UK: 06-15 Jan

As much as i would love to put my name down for all of them, it just isnt possible :'( However, i can provide photos from Southampton and London, if you are attending any of the shows listed, or any others for that matter, then please would you consider the sharing of photos.

    Many thanks,

    Jon

Well, back from SIBS, with 284 photos!

I have, however, just put an idea forward to Carl, that we should have a whole thread for boat show photos, where people can post their photos from shows, and also request and particular boats or shows. I think this is a much better solution as there was not a lot of response to the compilation of image sets from different shows.

    What do people think?

Good show Jon. With so many photos of this show I would suggest organizing them into several threads. Instead of all in one. Say divided up by LOA, or something like that. Just to make it easy on folks who are interesting in seeing only certain yachts. I'm sure Carl will have some good ideas too.

Right tantetruus. What I meant to say is to use multiple threads for each show. Where the number of photos for that show is large. Another way to organize photos is by viewpoint. Such as the thread that Carl put together showing only wheelhouse interiors. I just lose interest in a thread that rattles on for 50 photos or more.
