Huh! I just read this on Bertram 31 forums. I guess the Captains, engineers, architects etc. on this site don't know what they are talking about.
Quite a few of the 31 regulars who like to think they know everything speculated just as we all did when the story broke. I wonder why they think our thoughts are BS and theirs is science?
There are several from that site who read Yachtforums regularly (hi guys!) and run back to report. I actually directed a new Bertram 31 owner (he was new on this site) over to the 31 site so he could get some good restoration information. I made a joke that they werent very nice & didn't know much (there are some VERY knowledgeble people there) and I was SLAMMED.
Anyway, I thought you might like to know they are getting their information and posting yachtforums links and pictures. I wonder why they can't find the info for themselves?

This is where i am at with the whole deal, the 25+ pages on yachforums is filled with enough BS and speculation and letters from bertram presidents, and hate mail etc.

Coolair- I never looked at YF until this happened. What I see does not impress me so far, lots of blow hards. Something that this forum is thankfully in short supply of.

Can't fault them too much. The 63 thread is mostly filled with speculation with a good bit of bashing thrown in. In fact, lately it's become a boat jokes thread. That happens when you have a lot of people interested in a subject who are anxious for facts that are few and far between. Personally, I don't mind speculation as long as it doesn't masquerade as fact, but you're going to get that as well (intentional and not) when there are a lot of people waiting for answers concerning an important matter. Most thinking people understand which are which. Even today there was a post asking if anything new was heard (like it wouldn't have been posted?). Theorizing is a very good way to search for answers, not only to the initial question, but also to other questions the subject brings up. I suspect a lot of people now know a lot more about navigation, the importance of maintaining a good watch, the importance of rechecking a plotted course, delamination issues and Bertram. I guess that if YF had fewer members the amount of BS would be lessened, but so would the amount learned. I suspect that the 31 site has far fewer members simply because of the limited topic and that's fine for them. Personally, I don't own a 31 and have no need to follow their site unless I have a particular question. YF simply has a wider audience. Some things just come with the territory. When a thread loses it's interest to me I'll just monitor it for news and look for other topics to learn from. Glad to have that option and the number of people I get to learn from here. "Coolair" apparently only wants to hear things he agrees with. That's a very limiting way to live, but if it works for him it's cool.

    NYCapt...

I wasn't faulting them for speculating. We were doing the same thing here. I just find it funny that they feel we are full of "BS" yet they came here fishing for their info and pictures.. I especially love this guys description of yachtforums members being "a bunch of blow hards". "Something that this site is thankfully in short supply of".
    Classy, real classy.

Well. if the guy was English, blowhards would refer to sailing vessels and Yachts in the UK are sailing vessels, so, extrapolate Yacht forums to info about sailing vessels....differeent folks different strokes, keep an open mind....

Yes, it's interesting, when my Brother comes out to visit and he see a fine looking 30 ft sailboat, he says'" there is a fine looking Yacht" I always reply "where?", sooner or later they will catch up across the pond...

Will always remember the night in a club below Piccadilly Sq. that I met a fine lady. She caught this 17 yr. old NY'er when she commented on my U.S. cigarettes. Luckily we got past the different terminology. :D

Please let me introduce myself. I am a lifelong boater. I love boats, all types- sail or power, downeast or sportfisherman, trawler, commercial, etc. I started reading this forum after the 63 Bertram debacle. I want to be clear that I learned a lot from this forum, about that incident and about a whole bunch of ancillary items.

My post on Bertram31 was unthought out, unfair, and off base. At the time I wrote it I had just finished reading some of the later pages of the thread and it appeared that it had gotten way out of hand with a lot of silly and irrelevant stuff being posted. The moderator stepped in, pointed out what was happening, and surprisingly everyone seemed to agree and the thread got right back on track. That is impressive and laudable.

I apologize for posting that statement on B31. Since coming over here I have continued to read the threads and plan on doing so for sometime. I enjoy most of what you guys write, and I have learned quite a bit from it. I hope to be able to contribute to this forum in the future.

Well, that's quite an entrance. Welcome to YF. Personally, I hate boats and wonder which one will kill me, but am addicted.:D I think you'll find a good education here between a bit of BS. I'm only on the water about 50 years so I'm still learning. Looking forward to your input. Again, Welcome.

I grew up and became responsible a long time ago. I found out it's a lot cheaper to get paid to run everyone else's boats around and playing with them, rather then spending my hard earned money on my own. hehehehe........

    jspiezio....
Thank you for stepping up & saying something. Good man! All too often people sit behind their computers and bash anyone on the other end & not think twice about it. It's entirely different when that person comes back to clear the air.
We are all boat nuts. Sorry I picked you out of the bunch over on B31. I hope you spend some time here & learn more about the great people & the vast knowledge base. I grew up on the water, was an engineer, mate captain, ran yachts all over the world, raced offshore, got out, slowed down and play with my Bertram now. I thought I knew a lot but many of the people here have forgotten more than I'll ever know.

Hello......my name is David. ummmm.....I have been using boats all my life....sigh....I am a functioning boataholic:D

    All the best!
    David
