    Hi everyone,

we have a 58' Hatteras build in 1973, and I'm looking to install an autopilot. As far as I can tell I can use any core-pack, but the hydraulic-pump size needs to be of a certain capacity to handle the boat. Does anyone know what I need for mine, and have any suggestions ?

    Thanks !!

Obviously it depends on the volume of your rudder cylinder. To give a rule of thumb I would suggest that hard to hard in 20 seconds will be absolutely acceptable.

Your Hydraulic ram will have a displacement / size number either stamped or on a afixed label / More than likely a Hynautic system. Give the ram # to your electronics guy or look at the pump size vs ram @ Simrads or equal web site for proper pump. You may have a twin ram installation or even a slave ram assist so take that into consideration.

I replaced the Autopilot pump on my Bertram 54 recently.

It has the Simrad/Robertson AP20 Autopilot.

    Pump was the SIMRPU160
    It's a 22 CUI Reversible pump.

My steering ram is a Hynautic K31.

I put a AP28 on the Donzi with a RPU 160 also. Works great, and has more features than I will utilize in all likelihood, yet is not overly complex.
Are you planning on installing it yourself?

    Thanks everyone

I'm going to open up but had confirmed already from the previous owner that the pumps suggested would indeed do the trick
I'll jump in down below to check the ram(s) myself and determine from there.
Yes, I was planning to install myself, I used to be a car mechanic and I have already installed an aries windpilot on my previous sailing yacht, and completed this with a Raymarine autohelm to swing the pendulum when there was not enough wind to operate the windpilot, so I am a bit familiar with the flux compass etc., etc. :)

I have a Navico-group autopilot as well and I am quite happy with it. However, for the hydraulic components I decided for Lecomble&Schmitt. Their hydraulic pump somehow seemed more substantial to me.
