I have twin 485 HP 671 TIB in a 44 Ocean SS. Turbo functioning, intercooler clean, new M15 injectors and engines performing the best they can. Loaded WOT 2200 rpm, egt 800°f, should be 2500 and 600°f, both engines the same. No black smoke. Airbox 15 psi and boost 13psi, max airbox is much higher. I have concluded the engines are over loaded by the 24x27 cupped 3 blade nibr props. How much pitch should I take out considering the engines should develop more power as the pitch is decreased. Is your performance with new injectors the same as with the old injectors? I’m assuming that’s the case, and everything else checks out so now you’re looking at the props. To increase WOT by 300 rpm via prop pitch I would probably reduce by 2” (removing the cup would reduce some load also). Be sure you’re getting max throttle at the motor before you do anything though lol. I think 600 is unrealistic for WOT pyro temp on those motors. Personally I would be more than satisfied with 750. That’s just my opinion from lots of years running lots of DD71’s.
On top of agreeing with RER suggestions, while you are at that I'd check also the exhaust system backpressure. That's in fact another highly relevant factor affecting EGT. Not sure of what's the max backpressure recommended by the manufacturer for your engines, but you should find it in the installation manual.
What’s the condition of your u/w hull? Is it clean, reasonably fresh paint? And how about your trim tabs? Are they working as they should? 300 RPM is quite a bit. Did the loss occur suddenly or over long period of time? Have you ever seen appropriate WOT since owning the boat? And as RER mentioned, what’s your max, no load RPM? Make sure your throttles/cables are pushing to the pins.
I can reach 2700 nl rpm, the hull is clean although it does need a bottom job, have never been able to achieve loaded wide open throttle, achieved 100 rpm more with new injectors, was 2100. The exhaust back pressure was measured and in spec. Agree, egt should be around 750 at full throttle, 600 at cruise. The trim tabs are functioning.
I thought you were getting close on your last note. Can't remember if I asked before; Enough air? "Airbox 15 psi and boost 13psi, max airbox is much higher." Was thinking the air box should be over 20. Interesting the air box has more pressure than the turbo. At WOT, I expect both to be the same. Do you have a by-pass blower? Working? Have you run without the air filter yet? Yes, I know my questions could be answered without specs just by; Clear exhaust. Clear exhaust is not the 100% answer of air in restrictions. It's close. Enough fuel? I thought you already checked fuel pressure before, but; before or after the secondary filters? Throttle delay or servo holding down the rack? Removed yet? Fuel restriction fitting still in place before the return fuel cooler? There is an old trick that was explained to me, I've never done it. Remove buffer screw. At WOT, push a screwdriver straight in where the buffer screw was. You will be in contact with the governor arm, push it in, If you pick up RPM, you missed something mechanical. Spare props available? Loaner props from the prop shop or another boating friend?
I checked surveys from some Ocean Super Sports that I’ve sold. I found two 48’ SS. Both were 485HP 671TIB w/1.5:1 gears. One had 24 x 26 props and the other had 24 x 25 props. Both were three blades. They both had a large RIB and davit on the foredeck. Both boats performed flawlessly. I’m pretty sure 24 x 27 was the original spec for your 44’ SS. Personally I wouldn’t hesitate to take an inch of pitch out of an older sport fisher. But I seriously doubt that’s going to get you 300 RPM. Two inches is a bit more drastic and might be necessary. Those Ocean SS’s are slippery boats. Inch for inch you may get more pop from pitch reduction than a Hatteras or Bertram.
I have ran without air filters and with er hatch and cabin door open. Fuel pressure is 65 to 70 after the final filter, fuel restrictors are in place. I have done the dead rack screwdriver test and no change in rpms. I have checked the throttle delay and it is not restricting rack travel. I have not tried spare props. I have the by-pass valves, took one off, best I can tell it functions but don't know how to test it. From what I can tell it functions on turbo pressure and my boost is low. By-pass must be closed because air press is lower than boost. RER, 24 x 27 is the standard prop but were they cupped. I took my props off yesterday, will measure them and compare to my spare set. Both sets are stamped the same but the spare measures 27.5 to 28 pitch with hand tools. would love to try a spare set of props. Will see what the prop shop has and see if anybody on the Ocean group will let me try their's. Thanks for all the help.
I run a 1996 45' Ocean SS w 485HP 671 TIBs The boat came to me 23 years ago with 24x27 4 blade and over the years I am currently running 24x25 and can make 2470 rpm at 29knots WOT. Over the years the engines get a little tired and the hull seems to gain a little weight. Good luck.
I ran a 63’ ocean that the owner owned from 1 year old until 2015, eventually we had to take 3” of pitch out. I’d see if you can locate a new(ish) set of wheels in 24-25” pitch. Prop technology has changed a bit since your boat was built
