    How much does it cost to decommission a bulk carrier for the salvaging of scrap for a 60,000 DWT vessel?

    I hear the best place to ship the vessel off to would be the shores of India, Chittagong is said to be the capital of the world for decommissioning.

    Do you know how many workers would be working on your vessel?

    How much are they paid per day?

    I read some NBC article from 2006 that said workers are paid $1 a day, is that really true?

    How many months would it take to decommission?

    How much scrap do you think can be salvaged from a 60,000 DWT vessel?

    The NBC article did make mention of the dangers that these Indians are put to when decommissioning as they are mainly off the street employees or don't have proper training and tools and equipment and get sick. But the Indians say that if you want your vessel decommissioned elsewhere expect to pay 10 times more. I hear even 25% of your vessels value. Especially in the USA. Is this true?

    I just thought as a lot of people hang out on this site, someone may have the technical knowledge of knowing the specific details in this area.

    I can think of one or two marinas in Trinidad and St. Maarten where the rusting hulk of a Bulk Carrier would not look out of place. You could kinda hide it in there until it dissolves, most of them seem to have the same plan. :D

    What kind of answers are important to you? The scrap value or the bad situation for the workers?

    I already done that and you don't get specific information unless you contact a company which I don't want to do as I don't want to waste their time. I don't want to waste your time guys either but if anyone of you already know the answer then I would like to hear them.

    AMG, I don't want to know the scrap value, just the questions I have asked from my first post of this thread. Even estimates would do. I just need a general idea of answers.

    Is this a homework assignment?

    If you don't want to interview the people who have the answer, I don't see much value in asking anyone else.

    You could look up the price per light ton of ships that have recently sold to breakers. Figure the buyer makes a small profit and you might be in the same hemisphere, not close but you might have a figure to use since you don't really want to know badly enough to ask the people who are actually in the business.

    Speaking of hemispheres, if it is in the western one you can figure it costs more to break the ship than the ship cost which is why most ships are broken up in the other one.
