I know where the heat exchanger is on my engine but not sure where the after or intercooler is on the Man Cr900 engine. Do most engines have all three or is this just terminology. Can someone try to explain to me.
On the MAN V blocks, the heat exchanger is in front, other end from the gear usually, round end caps. The after-coolers is that big, flat, square thing on top of the engine, forward of middle toward the H/E. It's job is to cool the air after it's been compresses by that hot ole turbo charger. Don't let inter & after cooler bug you much. but technically, yours is an after-cooler. You don't have all three. On some old stuff like my Detroit's, the air coolers were between the turbo and supper charger, then called an inter-cooler. On the fancier Detroit's, the air cooler was after the blower, the last point before the air box, then it's an after-cooler. So, after your last air compressor (turbos) it gets forced into the after-coolers, then air rails, then into the cylinders. Don't let fuel-coolers, engine oil and gear oil-coolers further confuse you, they are there also. l hope that helps.
Excellent just what I needed to know!! Yes I am familiar with the engine oil cooler and the gear oil cooler as had issue with both. Small leak in gear oil cooler around welded fitting and engine oil cooler gasket blew.
Don't forget the fuel cooler if so equipped, most blockages start here on Detroits, not sure on MAN's......
Inter-cooler, after-cooler or sometimes pre-cooler- all names which can be called simply charge air coolers.
