This was a surprise... took a cruise on Sunday from Ft. Lauderdale down to Miami to check on the new "Niki Beach". As we passed through Port Everglades (which has up to 8 or more cruise ships in port on weekends) we spot a smaller than average cruise ship!

For those of you not familiar with this new GIANT in the yachting world, it is the new 413' "Octopus". It belongs to Paul Allen (Microsoft). Rumor has it that this "ship" has a helicopter landing pad on the aft deck with a built-in hangar!

Sorry I couldn't take closer pictures, or side shots, but the port authority doesn't allow civilian boats to break from navigation channels since 9/11.

Well Carl, only the other day I was thinking about telling you that Octopus had arrived at Port Everglades and I was almost asking you if it was possible to go and take a look...

I can't wait to see her. I expect her to come over to the Med soon and certainly for the big events coming up : Cannes Film Festival and the Monaco GP.

    I saw Octopus too

    Hi Guys,

Just got back from a Eastern Caribbean cruise, as we left Ft. Lauderdale, looking back saw Octopus moored on the outside of the breakwall. Wow, what a vessel. My 13 year old son knew the vessel, told me quite a bit about it, he must read Power & Motoryacht more carefully than me.

I have some pics too, they're side shots, but from pretty far away, and it was really hazy that day.

Lürssen was the main contractor, but did only some interior work for the owner spaces at HDW. So the ship was completely built at HDW. Look at my HDW thread. I will take your pictures and comments also into that thread.

    Hi,

Ron - I would not believe much of the blurb on that website, I would also venture to say not all the photos purporting to be projects he has worked on are actually boats he has had anything to do with.

Long time and nothing heard much about "Octopus". Today I received a tweet that the owner of "Octopus" will embark on an ocean expedition to the HMS "Hood", which sunk in 1941 with the British Royal Navy after the Olympics.

Octopus has participated on numerous research programs, making best use of all the toys onboard. I remember it participated on a documentary about the legacy of the atomic tests that were made in the Bikini Atoll, in the pacific. There was a short version on youtube on which you could see many sections of the yacht, the sub interior, the helicopters and the impressive display of technollogy. Unfortunately, I cann't find it. Will look more.

Is this Bikini Submarine Ops Movie the movie you are looking for?

Be patient, the whole movie had to download before it started to play and it is a big file.

Octopus is very cool. Someone sent me the attached slideshow a while back and I thought I would share. I added it as an attachment.

The full version was floating around on the web. Not sure if I can still find it though.
