An HCB 53 Suenos used as a chaseboat to a superyacht that was at the time in St Barths has impacted into rocks at Anse des Cayes Bay in Saint Barthélemy. Six persons were injured. It is believed the chaseboat belongs to superyacht "Loon".

They didn’t just hit some rocks, as in a reef offshore… they hit the island itself. How the hell can this happen?

I wonder if we'll get a "what really happened" of it on their YouTube channel. I'm guessing not...

Is this even investigated in St Barths?

Yeah you can bet the Gendarmerie is going to investigate. It s a bit like Italy… guilty until proven innocent which in this case may be justified.

this is my old home port. I used to have my boat on a mooring just a mile from where they crashed… no sober operator would pass close to that rocky point.

I would have thought a crew member would be at the helm and likely shouldn’t be drinking. Heard somewhere it was the Loon captain but that isn’t confirmed.

I'm not sure of what triggers your perception of Italian judicial system, but if you would be interested in a more solid evaluation, check out this webpage.
You will see that, for all its faults, Italy ranks pretty close to the land of the free and home of the brave.
And both of us rank below Korea and Lithuania, just to pick a couple of examples.

But that's just to set the records straight, mind. I'm not complaining about your comment.
As an Italian, I'm always happy when my Country springs to mind to anyone, regardless of whether correctly or not.
As the old saying goes, there's no such thing as bad publicity! :)

My perception comes from dozens of cases where people involved in accidents ended up in the crosshairs of local prosecutors desperate to get their 15 seconds of fame… the Bayesian accident comes to mind along with the 15+ years case against the Williams F1 following the death of Ayrton Senna at Imola

Why, do you know something we still don't about the Bayesian?
BTW, Italian authorities immediately authorized MAIB to join the investigations based on the vessel registration, so if you really wish to blame a whole Country for something related to that accident, you should as well include the UK.

Regardless, you'll forgive me if I consider the WJP (which is an independent organization, but still headquartered in Washington DC, so you'd struggle to argue that I quoted a biased source) more reliable than your personal perception...

Thought there would have been more hull damage - looks like it will buff out! I see an HCB advertisement coming soon!

I'll be the devil's advocate here: I'm an avid viewer of his channel, and have been for some years. Admittedly, I'm on the outside looking in, as I am part of worker-class and presently find myself without a yacht, much less a superyacht. If I was an owner of a vessel subject to his attention, I may feel differently. However, I do appreciate that he recognized the demand for video-driven news and information specific to the yachting world. No offense to YF, but nobody has come close to providing nearly daily yachting news in such detail. Given how often his channel is both cited and "borrowed" from by major news aggregators and providers, I'd say he hit the mark. Additionally, 300k+ subscribers is nothing to sneeze at as far as YT channels go. He's reached a critical mass (monetization) that will hopefully allow the channel to expand and provide more accurate and informative content going forward.

No offense taken. Many YouTubers rely on forums for their information, not only for accuracy of content but also because breaking news often originates on forums.

It's worth noting, YouTube videos garner a substantial number of views from the independent web pages they are posted on (not just YouTube). There are 1000's of videos posted to YF that contribute to the overall views these videos receive and I'm sure this helps contribute to the number of subscribers a channel has too.

Admittedly I'm prejudice but I prefer forums for how quickly I can scan threads and scroll posts to get the info I'm looking for as opposed to watching a 10-20 minute YT video!

For what it's worth, and from someone who has been involved in an MAIB investigation, the Marine Accident Investigation Branch of the MCA has a specific mission to learn from and prevent future accidents. Before they even begin an interview a contract is signed stating that they WILL NOT allow your statements to be used in prosecution, unless you are untruthful in said statement.

I appreciate what you're saying, and I'm sure you're correct in assuming that Yacht Report is also "borrowing" from forums (such as this one) for topics and details on specific happenings in the industry. After about 17.5 years of enjoying Yacht Forums, I see the need and room for both forums and YT channels dedicated to yachting to exist and compliment one another. Indeed, I hope I may continue to enjoy both for many more years to come. As a avid consumer of information and knowledge on yachting, I'm very grateful for all you do to keep this forum what it is. I particularly admire the way this forum is tightly managed to keep out shills and those who have an agenda that is not entirely genuine.

Happy New Year and Thank You!

P.S. given that I've been here since 2007....do you think you could remove the "new member" appellation from my screen name?

Done! The Senior Member nomenclature is reserved for members making over 200 (informative) posts. Given your 18 year tenure, you've earned the designation.
