    Hi,
I've got a water separator, Halyard part #: H001516, that isn't really separating properly and I'm trying to understand why.

Before the sep is a silencer, Halyard Part #: H001631.

We're getting water out of the gas exhaust and bubbling out of the raw water discharge, that appear to come in waves, about every 12 seconds. It seems to coincide with ejection of the silencer.
It's almost as if the separator is being overwhelmed by the volume of the silencer.
That's my best guess... any other ideas?
    Thanks

    Hi,

Have you ever considered that the volume of water going into it might be to much for it to cope with?

Is it possible the raw water drain part is somehow restricted or blocked.

The bubbles you are seeing are likely because of the turbulence in the chamber with an increased level of water.

Is this a problem from brand new or has it recently started?

I worked on a sail boat years ago that had a two stage SW Pump part put it thru the Heat Exchanger and into the Exhaust and the other part took it out. It was a PITA of note on both gensets and more than once I had the Injectors out to wind her over and dump the SW in the cylinders.

This yacht was built by one of the best too - Jongert.

    Hi,
The separator being overwhelmed by volume is the only answer I can come up with.
Intitially we thought it might be the check valve on the thru-hull combined with the water pressure against the valve @ 1.5' below the waterline. But we removed the flapper and tested and had the same results.
We have removed every piece and inspected for obstruction, but haven't found any.

This is a problem from new and the best "fix" for this has been a s/s sugar scoop added to the exhaust discharge to prevent the sooting up of the hull (owner's original complaint).

    Hi,

Can you jury rig a pipe and valve so you can adjust the flow of water to the aqua lift and let the rest go over the side?

If you can and can get the SW to stop coming out the gas outlet, check the temps after a while in operation and see what it is like.

Beware that reducing the water flow might cause it to get hot but if you do it carefully and slow you should see any large rises as they occur and take corrective action.

On a predecessor to the previously mentioned Jongert I was on another one where the OB Discharge was closed while the genset was going. The aqualift lifted alright. It took a trip to the beach some roven woving lower layers and a good chopstrand mat cover to fix it as good as new.

    Hi,
Yeah I've got no chance of testing anymore, we tore the system down and inspected the components, but now the fix is in place and that's as good as it gets.
    Thanks
