Who else is following the Golden Globe?

    [crickets]

most have heard of the Vendee Globe, round the world, solo, no stops on 60’ Imocas. The race has it roots in the original Golden Globe of 1968 but now with modern boats and all the modern technology.

well the second “new” Golden Globe is about to see the first competitors arrive back in France late this week after 8 months at sea and it takes crazy to a whole new level. Still round the world, solo, non stop, no assistance but using the technology used back in 1968! That means no GPS, limited sat phone connecting only to Race Committee for safety, production boats between 32 and 36’, full keel and designed before 1988…

Pretty amazing achievement. And after 8 months the top two are only 90 miles apart.

Not following it, but I would've assumed anyone who sails has heard of it; heard of Robin Knox-Johnston.

It shows how hard it is that out of 16 entrants, there are only 3 left, plus 2 more who get some recognition but aren't eligible for the top awards because they stopped once (or got some assistance).

Amazing that 2 of the 3 are likely going to finish within a few hours of each other.

In many ways the modern version of the race, the Vendee Globe Challenge pales in comparison. It s also round the world, solo, no stops, no assistance but on state of the art 60’ Imocas with all the latest electronics incl video conferencing. And it lasts “only” 3 months or so. Psychology the Golden Globe has to be grueling with no contact with family or friends during 8+ months on a boat half the size.

I love the sport of ocean racing, I'm fascinated by it... but there's a snowball's chance in hell that I'd ever even consider doing something like that. It's a masochistic level of crazy.

Incredible that the first 2 are now some 110nm apart, with 65nm to go!
