ran 3 hours on AP and everything was fine until about 2 minutes from home port - Port engine revved up, then went to almost idle - Starboard engine stayed fine (master). tried a few times - same issue...

Any thoughts as to what is causing this?

It's actually your engine synchronizer. They're basically mechanical so first things first, check all the linkage points on the unit. Then the engine linkage.
If that's all good check back for further instructions.

I checked the 90 degree joint at the engine, greased them. Then disconnected each tach cable... they turn freely.... anything else I should check?

Did you inspect the actual unit?
Baring any linkage issues at the unit, your best to call Glendenning's service department. They are extremely helpful and might be able to point you at a particular item.

turns out the failure was at the 90 degree adapter at the front of the Yanmar engine. Got a new one coming.... man I miss this great feature!
