1987 48’ Super sport, twin 6 71 Detroits. Question: Looking for Port/Starboard charging info for Engine start battery and “housekeeping “ battery side. Which side charges each. Minimum alternator AMP rating required. From front of engine.. Port spins ?/ Starboard spins?. Need to pick correct alternator fan for each. Thanks

    Hello Jeff
    Welcome to Yacht Forums.

Alternators are a big subject to cover by typing. Lest start with what you had.
Any idea or pictures of what you started with?

The small frame that everybody is familiar with the the Delco 10SI with brushes. Down hill and with a cool wind, they can put out 40 to 90 amps.
    Stay with double belt pulleys.
I do recommend brush-less mid/large frame alternators that start with the 21SI units. Lots of these have dual direction fans.

    I am assuming a 12Vdc system.

Imo, the best way to cover a house bank is with an ACR from each starting bank.
Each alternator at least 80Amps (55-60Amps hot).
In this config, either engine can charge the house and the other starting bank in case of a single engine issue.
If you have a 12v gen-set, ACR that battery to the house bank also.

    Hope this helps
